Stephen Cosgrove is one of the best-selling children’s book authors of all time

Stephen Cosgrove is one of the best-selling children’s book authors of all time. His writing career began in 1973 when, while shopping at bookstores for his three-year-old daughter, he was frustrated by the lack of fun-to-read picture books that also convey positive values. Consequently, he decided to write his own stories. Cosgrove went on to create four titles that became the foundation of his best-selling Serendipity series, which has sold over 80 million copies worldwide.

Serendipity is a series of children's books about animals and other creatures. The books were written by Stephen Cosgrove and illustrated by Robin James. The books are short stories with colorful illustrations that have a moral perspective. After finding primarily large expensive books, Cosgrove teamed up with illustrator James to create low cost softcover books.

This is a nice gentle story to read in a soothing voice before a nap or bedtime, and one of very few children's books that don't drive me bonkers to read for the millionth time, go figure. My criteria for bedtime reading for the little ones is that it be gentle, soothing, and maybe gives them a little something to ponder as they drift off, and this on fits the bill. I occasionally watch a friend's sleep-averse toddler, and this is the only book that has gotten him to settle in for a nap every time (their paperback copy is quite a bit larger than this one for some reason). The glowing reviews for other titles of this series have piqued my interest too.

The illustrations and prose are beautiful as with all the books in this series, and children will probably enjoy it, but I found the story a little odd.

A caterpillar (whose mother is also a caterpillar) finds out she will one day become a butterfly. She wants to know what it will be like, but none of the butterflies will talk to her. Then after her own transformation, she realizes that it is indescribable, and will only say to a caterpiller who asks her what it is like, "You'll find out one day." Is the moral not to ask questions, or not to rush growing up?

I absolutely love all of the Stephen Cosgrove Serendipity books. I was disappointed to have so much difficulty finding these wonderful books, knowing that today's children are missing a wonderful, insightful and educational resource.

Love ALL Serendipity books! Got my first ones back in the late 70's.

I was supremely disappointed by this book. I had the original version as a child and I thought that this was a re-issue, but they changed the story.
It was a beautiful book to begin with - one of my childhood favorites - but the changes made have ruined the sweetness.

Love this book!! Unfortunately, I couldn't read it on my computer and had to pull out the tablet, but it's such a great book. All the Serendipity books are!
