Ian McDonald (born 18 April 1933) is a Caribbean-born writer who describes himself as "Antiguan by ancestry, Trinidadian by birth, Guyanese by adoption, and West Indian by conviction. His ancestry on his father's side is Antiguan and Kittitian, and Trinidadian on his mother’s side. His only novel, The Hummingbird Tree, first published in 1969, is considered a classic of Caribbean literature.

Ian McDonald (born 25 June 1946 from Osterley, Middlesex) is an English multi-instrumental musician, best known as a founding member of progressive rock band King Crimson, formed in 1969, and of the hard rock band Foreigner in 1976. He is well known as a rock session musician, predominantly as a saxophonist. He also plays keyboards, flute, vibraphone and guitar.

I was thinking of setting up an extra assembly line in Markton – but I can just as easily set up in Halifax or nearby. Training could be provided by local colleges while the plants assembly lines were being set up. I need good communications and shipping facilities, either rail or air, but I do need reliability. The big question was the Union’s, how would they react to this? One could of course set up a non-union shop – but that was just asking for trouble.

I was looking for another Ian McDonald after a wonderful experience with The Dervish House, and it seemed it was either Brasyl or a trilogy, which I wasn't sure I was ready for.
