My son (16 mos old) and I love to read this book at bedtime and naptime. It's an oversized board book (the size of a regular hardcover picture book) with just a couple of words on each page and a simple, alliterative, rhyming rhythm that's perfect for lulling little ones to sleep.

The illustrations, as well as the narrative thrust of the words and images, are full of warm tones and broad strokes. In just a few simple phrases and pictures, this book captures the love and security that a child feels with a parent. The lion and cub play, the cub gets lost (or thinks s/he is lost), the lion immediately finds and comforts the cub, they cuddle and sleep.

My son, who is 19 months, has loved this book since we got it when he was 7 months. It has very simple words, a couplet per page (Little lion, large lion, licking lion, laughing lion etc), with an enjoyable rhythm, but still manages to feel like it has a "storyline", ending with the classic "love you, love you, lullaby lion". The pictures are lovely African savannah colours, yellows and oranges with blue sky, but what really makes this book is how the illustrations show the love between the big lion and the baby lion. My son adores the final picture, and often insisting on turning to it first when we read the book, or coming back to it after we have finished reading.
