This year, in second grade, my teacher read a very funny book to our class. Maybe I should have been wearing my rabbit’s foot the day I fell roller-skating. If I had been wearing it, I might not have broken my wrist. I liked it a lot. The book was called Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang. My name is Karen Brewer. But sometimes I think it should be Karen Two-Two. Why? Because of all the twos in my life.

She is the best, best big sister ever.

My little brother Andrew and my friend Nancy Dawes were on the sidewalk. They were not on roller skates. It was easier for them to jump out of my way than for me to stop. She is the best, best big sister ever. Daddy carried me out to Elizabeth’s station wagon. We’ll take this car, he said.

Synopsis: Karen Brewer is spending the weekend at her father's place, and she has new roller skates which she is excited to try. She wants to try out some tricks that she saw on TV, but she forgets to wear her wrist guard as she goes out, and after imitating a simple trick, she falls down and hurts her wrist. She is taken to the emergency room, where the doctor gives her a shot, and puts a cast on her arm which he says she would have to wear for eight weeks!

Later, she meets her classmate Ricky at the hospital who has a similar cast on his ankle, but with lots of autographs, and tells her that he would be getting one from Hubert Gregory, the famous baseball player. Karen's mission for the rest of the weekend is to beat Ricky by having more people sign her autographs, including someone famous. However, afraid that her classmates might think she got a cast for such a minor incident, Karen starts exaggerating about her accident to her friends. Will Karen beat Ricky and get more autographs, before her exaggerated stories go out of control?

Review: I enjoyed reading this book because I thought it was fun and educational to read. It was interesting to see the author introduce terms such as stethoscope and `Merthiolate', along with the process of how the doctor did the X-Ray and put the cast on her. Some parts were also exciting to read, like when Karen tries to get Morbidda Destiny's autograph or when we get to read and decipher the messages that her friends and family wrote on her cast.

The only part I was disappointed with this book was the title. I think it should have been renamed "Karen's Cast" or "Karen's Autographs" or even "Karen's Accident", not "Karen's Roller Skates" because she spent more time in her cast than she did in her roller skates.

Apart from that, I liked reading this book, and cant wait for the next one in the series.
Ann M. Martin actually hid lessons throughout this book. For example, when Karen succeeds in doing something difficult but hurts herself doing something simple, that shows the reality that sometimes it is the easy tasks that bring us down. When Karen lies because she thinks the true story is boring, and her brother Andrew gets the true story out of her, and her friends do not mind, it shows that honesty is the best policy, and also that friends will not care how something happens to you, that is, it is not important to them if the story is mundane. Lastly, Karen competes against her classmate, and goes to seek what he says he will get, but when she stops looking for it, she gets the opportunity, showing that good things come to those who wait for them.
