The Trouble with Donovan Croft. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 12 years ago. I really enjoyed this book. One of the reasons I enjoyed this book is because it is very realistic, and there is some suspense. I really like it how the author doesn't reveal everything about Donovan at the beginning of the story.

The trouble with Donovan Croft is that he doesn't speak. Bernard Ashley's story was in the vanguard of a movement in the 1970s to provide children with books with modern protagonists facing contemporary problems. That, at least, is the trouble with Donovan Croft for everyone else. Donovan is what was then called "the product of a broken home" – his mother has to return to Jamaica and his father is unable to work sufficient hours at his low-paid job and still look after his son, so Donovan is put into foster care.

oceedings{Ashley1975TheTW, title {The Trouble With Donovan Croft}, author {Bernard Ashley and Fermin Rocker}, year {1975} . Donovan Croft is sent to be fostered by Keith Chapman's family when Donovan's mother has to return to the West Indies. But the trauma of leaving his parents is too much for Donovan, and he becomes mute. He won't talk to Keith or his family, and he won't talk to the teachers at school. The combination of Donovan's silence, and the racist attitudes of both pupils and teachers at school means trouble, and it's the growing bond between Donovan and Keith which helps them all find a way to resolutio.
