With the aid of his father Zeus, young Perseus vanquishes his enemies and rescues the Princess Andromeda and Danae, his mother. Perseus is sent to slay Medusa and also saves a princess from a sea serpent. Format:Library Binding.

Medusa was one of three sisters, the gorgons, but she was the only mortal one. Some versions say all three were born as monsters, but the predominant myths had them as gorgeous maidens. He asked Athena and Hermes for help and two of them, together with the nymphs, provided winged sandals to fly him to the end of the world where gorgons lived, a cap that made him invisible, a sword and a mirrored shield. The latter was the most important tool Perseus had, since it allowed him to see a reflection of Medusa’s face and to avoid being turned into stone.

Perseus with the Head of Medusa is a bronze sculpture made by Benvenuto Cellini in the period 1545–1554. The sculpture stands upon a square base with bronze relief panels depicting the story of Perseus and Andromeda, similar to a predella on an altarpiece. It is located in the Loggia dei Lanzi of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy. The second Florentine duke, Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, commissioned the work with specific political connections to the other sculptural works in the piazza.

I used to check out this book from the library all the time when I was in third grade. That was a long time ago, so this was definitely a nostalgia buy for me, BUT the art is great (although I don't know whether Ancient Greeks had blond hair) and the adaptation of the original myth is great for children as long as parents can help them understand the violence in the story.

"This book was read by me as a child and came out right before Clash of the Titans! Excellent work!"

This book is nothing short of a great find. I wanted to buy specifically a 'Perseus and Medusa' book for my son and spent hours searching for one. Since he is not old enough to sift through Greek mythology collections yet, I wanted stand alone books for Perseus and Hercules alone for now, and that turned out to be (to my dismay) a really challenging hunt! I still remember black and white illustrations of the Perseus and Medusa that I read as a child but cannot for the life of me recollect what book I read it from! Finally, I stumbled upon this out of print version, the steal price was an added bonus:) It arrived just now and I am pretty impressed at the adaptation and especially the water color illustrations. This same series and publication has a few other of the popular Greek stories in exactly the same kind of adaptation, they are - Hercules, Pegasus, Jason and the golden fleece and, Demeter and Persephone.
Cannot go wrong with this series of Greek myths for age 5+!
