Outside Over There is a picture book for children written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. It concerns a young girl named Ida, who must rescue her baby sister after the child has been stolen by goblins. Outside Over There has been described by Sendak as part of a type of trilogy based on psychological development from In the Night Kitchen (toddler) to Where the Wild Things Are (pre-school) to Outside Over There (pre-adolescent).

Reading Maurice Sendak's books has become a new tradition in this grandma's home.

The artwork is wonderful and my son (. years old) will just sit and flip through the pages for extended periods of time, looking at all of the details in the pictures. It is definitely a perfect addition to our Sendak collection that we truly treasure. Reading Maurice Sendak's books has become a new tradition in this grandma's home. I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of "Where the Wild Things Are" until the 35-year-old attorney I work with mentioned it.

By Maurice Sendak Harper & Row. 1981 appears to be the Year of Sendak. It marks the apogee of the picture book form, a simply profound story told in incantatory words and color drawings of stunning beauty. In creating the 359-word tale, Sendak is said to have been drawn to such childhood memories as the Lindbergh kidnapping and to have listened exclusively to Mozart to evoke the ambiance for the book’s Grimm setting in rural eighteenth-century Germany. Outside Over There is about jealousy and sibling rivalry.

With Papa off to sea and Mama despondent, Ida must go outside over there to rescue her baby sister from goblins who steal her to be a goblin's bride.

I read this book when I was little and now that I have a niece and baby brother, I bought a copy for each of them. It is an excellent book with a unique story and unique illustrations. So glad to see this on Amazon. P.S. the dog in the book is a German Shepherd, which I love because I have one.

Maurice Sendak at his best, well, after Where the Wild Things Are. Great story of brave Ida and her clever dealings with the goblins. Sendak shows us that scary bullies are really babies themselves. I love the female protagonist and the strength and wisdom she gains from her sailor father. Illustrations are detailed and evocative of earlier times. It is a Caldecott Honor book. Nice to have it in paperback so we all can afford to have our own copies.

We love reading Maurice Sendak at our house and Outside Over There is one of my toddler son's (and my own) all time favorites. The artwork is wonderful and my son (2.5 years old) will just sit and flip through the pages for extended periods of time, looking at all of the details in the pictures. It is definitely a perfect addition to our Sendak collection that we truly treasure. I definitely recommend this book to any prospective children's book readers!

Reading Maurice Sendak's books has become a new tradition in this grandma's home. I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of "Where the Wild Things Are" until the 35-year-old attorney I work with mentioned it. I asked my son if he'd heard of it since I had never read it to him as a child, and he too was horrified to learn that it was one book not in the thousands of books catalogued in my memory. Needless to say, I own it now, and it is one of my 3-year-old granddaughter's favorites. That led me to do a little research on Mr. Sendak's other books. Being a huge fan of the movie "Labyrinth," this book was an obvious choice. It too is a huge success with my little one, especially since she has a baby sister and can personalize the story. I highly recommend it.

A great, weird Sendak Classic. He was never afraid to add some strangeness and fear, which a lot of modern authors seem to veer away from. I think it's vital and necessary to have a bit, for realities sake. This is a good dose of both, with great illustrations (of course).

I started a tradition, where I buy my mom books she read to us as kids for; Christmas, birthdays and mothers day. This was one of my favorite books as a kid and I remember my mom reading it to me many times. Reading it again as an adult I realized how sad and troubled of a story it actually is. But it is beautifully written, and the illustrations are phenomenal.

i was obsessed with this book as a little girl, i know every word. i carried the hardback version around with me for years to eventually pass on to the little girl i knew i'd have, but it was lost somewhere between here and california. such a wonderful story for parents with siblings, to gently teach responsibility to your older one for your younger one. in several interviews sendak said this was his favorite book, it was loosely based on his relationship with his sister. wonderful adventure and beautifully illustrated. :)
book in very nice shape, no complaints. story cute & ok.
