Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak (Inuktitut: ᐊᕐᕚᕐᓗᒃ ᑯᓱᒐᖅ) is a storyteller and a Canadian children's writer, who tells stories about Arctic and Inuit culture. He was born April 27, 1948 just north of Chesterfield Inlet, at a point of land we call Qatiktalik (known as Cape Fullterton in English). In Kusugak’s first book, A Promise is a Promise, a girl named Allashua decides that her mother’s warnings about the sea ice must be wrong, and decides to go and play near the cracks in the spring ice. She is taken by creatures who live under the ice, the Qallupilluit, who crave children but have promised never to take children who are with their parents. Written by Robert Munsch. Illustrated by Vladyana Krykorka. Whenever I went through Rankin Inlet, flying from one place to another, I would stay with the family of Michael Kusugak. Published by Annick Press, 1992. Michael started telling me Inuit stories that they use to keep kids from getting hurt. They have a monster who lives under the ice and the idea of that story is to keep kids from falling through the cracks in the ice. There are other monsters who live on the tundra and grab kids as soon as their parents can’t see them. The idea of these monsters is to keep kids from walking over the horizon, getting lost and freezing to death.

Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak is an Inuit storyteller who grew up in Repulse Bay, NWT (now Naujaat, Nunavut). Vladyana Krykorka has illustrated and designed over 30 books for children. During his childhood, his family traveled by dog sled, living a traditional Inuit lifestyle. Her work has received numerous awards, including the Toronto Public Library's recognition of Baseball Bats for Christmas as one of the 100 best children's books of all time. In the last two years she has conducted art workshops in several Quebec Arctic communities, working with Inuit teachers in the creation of their own books and class materials, as well as textile printmaking techniques.

I bought this to read to my Girl Scout Troop, but it ended up being really scary, so I opted not to read it to them. Instead I bought "The Promise" by Nicola Davies. Much more appropriate. I did read it to my 6 year old and she likes it.

I could not find this used so I bought it new. A moral wrapped in a fun easy read. (With a little scariness thrown in too.)
