I am an early middle-aged woman and am not embarrassed to admit that I bought this book for myself. It was my favorite as a child and I have never forgotten Amelia changing the towels, dressing the chicken, dusting the house... I can be very literal-minded myself and wonder sometimes if this book influenced me, or if the reason it appealed to me so much was because I was already very literal-minded as a child.
This very nice-looking edition now stands behind the glass door of of my hutch, proudly displayed with my other treasures.

Amelia Bedelia is one of the many well-known children's book character I had heard of but never read. My first encounter with her was reading one of the current boring books to my son's kindergarten class. This is what happen's when you forget to bring your own book for reader of the day. The upside? It made me curious about the original Amelia Bedelia and I found the fantastic 50th anniversary edition. This edition includes the original 1963 Peggy Parish story and Fritz Siebel illustrations along with seven pages of pictures and notes describing the story's creation and information about the author and illustrator. The physical book itself is lovely. A large 9x11 size with soft cream pages and crisply printed black ink illustration shaded with gray and highlighted with a medium green.

If you aren't already familiar with Amelia, she is a literal minded maid who uses dusting powder to "dust" the furniture, a pen and paper to "draw" the drapes, and ribbon and lace to "trim" the fat on the steak. It's a vintage story so some things are old fashion and out of date. I had to explain "drawing" the drapes and "dressing" the chicken to my five year old. Mr Rogers, Amelia's employer, is smoking a pipe in the first picture and there are several pictures of Mrs. Rogers wearing a fox stole (you know the ones with a full fox head). Also in the end notes there is a picture of Peggy Parish's "Let's Be Indian" - cringe worthy.

Really though, it's a funny story and my son belly laughs through most of it. It's a treat be able to buy a new copy of a vintage classic.

I absolutely love this book! My grandfather bought me this book when I was a kid and buying this has brought back so many wonderful memories. Amelia Bedelia is funny and so adorable. It makes you really think about how to say stuff as well. Every child that I've read it to has loved it as well. I do really like the one that uses more colors and it more vibrant this one the pictures are a little toned down. But still an amazing book.

I work with kids and love using this book for critical thinking, predicting, and problem-solving. Its a silly book where Amelia interprets everything literally. When reading with kids, you can ask something like "oh, what do you think she might do?" "what did they really mean?" etc. It's a standard book size and the pictures are fun and engaging, which allow for more discussions about what is going on the pictures. Overall, I am very pleased with this book an would recommend!

Good book for your emerging reader as far as simple to sound out words or figure out in context. Some of the book is written in cursive, so that is an added challenge. The jokes are based on play on words "Draw the curtains" and she draws a picture of the curtains. Some of these may not be as common of terms today, so it can be confusing for a younger child who is an early reader. We never say "draw the curtains" in our house, or many of the other dated phrases. The husband on the first page is also smoking a pipe in the car which I found to be dated as well. But a classic and a longer book that is easier to read.

I've always heard of Amelia Bedelia but never actually read it. I bought a ton of books for my son and this was one of them and we both enjoyed it very much! Just watching him read and his reactions had me cracking up. This book was pretty hilarious and silly and makes reading enjoyable and fun for the kids. He actually read it twice (the second time right before bed) because he loved it so much. I purchased the whole set of Amelia Bedelia when she was younger and going to purchase as many as I can find like these when she's all grown up.

I volunteer in a shelter and try to keep books on hand for kids who are new, frightened etc. These are great stories, especially when a child may be at a disadvantaged reading level. Highly recommend, and the price point makes them affordable as give aways. Kids love them,
These books were recommended for my daughter to read by her teacher. Iam so glad that I purchased these for her because they are cute stories and they have really improved her reading scores at school!! Im trying to buy as many as possible to add to her collection of books for her reading program!! She loves them and she is proud to read them to me!!
