Masquerade is a picture book, written and illustrated by Kit Williams, published in August 1979, that sparked a treasure hunt by concealing clues to the location of a jewelled golden hare, created and hidden somewhere in Britain by Williams. The book became the inspiration for a genre of books known today as armchair treasure hunts. In March 1982 Williams received a sketch which he considered a good enough solution to the puzzle.

Masquerade is a children's picture & puzzle book painted by Kit Williams and published in 1979. The plot is fairly simple: The moon loves the sun, and to show how much she loves him, she gives a token of love to be delivered by the fastest creature around: Jack Hare. The hare then travels quickly through the country, and finally speaks to the sun, but finds that he's been careless and has lost the gift he was supposed to deliver, and the reader is tasked with finding where he dropped it.

Unique story behind this book (check it out online if you don't already know, especially Stuart Ashens' video on the subject)
I got this on a lark for a small gift and it was enjoyed by the recipient. Very cool artwork within.

This book is bizarre, bright, fabulous, and historic. I have fallen in love with the idea of armchair treasure hunts, like this book. There really aren't enough of them. I highly recommend this book, and I seem partial to the first edition, rather than later editions that explain everything, though that's nice too... there's something special about the first edition in this case.

An old favorite, from back in the day when writer-illustrators took pride in high-quality work. It's a fascinating story and book of clues for the author's hidden treasure that was eventually found by accident.
The Rollers of Vildar
This was a great childhood book. The artistic visuals are great at trying to fool the eye. There are so many details. The jewel encrusted rabbit that was buried has been found long ago, but it is still nice to dream..I decided to have one in hard and soft covers

A brilliant book that I purchased years after reading it as a child. Unfortunately the golden rabbit was found under less than honourable circumstances, but the book is still great.

Lovely idea of a treasure hunt, clues tucked away in illustrations. But I wasn't that excited by the illustrations when I recieved the book. The necklace/buried treasure is however very magical in appearance. I can't imagine how the solution was ever derived, kudos to those who managed it. Other than the concept of a beautiful necklace and a buried treasure hunt, this is not a book that I will need to keep in my permanent collection.

utterly magical tale, which is a delight to read. Although it is solved the puzzle is also great to figure out
to describe how this book makes me feel. The artwork and the whimsy of it take me somewhere I wish I could reside always. It is just beautiful.
