Der Struwwelpeter ("shock-headed Peter" or "Shaggy Peter") is an 1845 German children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book.

Hoffmann wrote Struwwelpeter in reaction to the lack of good children's books

Hoffmann wrote Struwwelpeter in reaction to the lack of good children's books. Now Heinrich Hoffmann's stories and pictures are most definitely entertaining, engaging to a point (and often very much thought-provoking), and Der Sruwwelpeter is a worthwhile and interesting example of 19th century German children's literature and pedagogy (especially since some critics are now convinced that Hoffmann actually intended Der Struwwelpeter not only as a pedagogical tool for children.

I recently spent a few days in Frankfurt, Germany. I asked the manager of the hotel which museum we should visit and she told me about the Struwwelpeter Museum dedicated to the doctor who wrote books in the mid 1800's to address the moral character of children who didn't mind. I was intrigued and ordered the book with the collection of stories and the consequences of children misbehaving. The illustrations are wonderful and the English translation excellent.

Hard to believe this was written but it is hilarious as long as you don't take it seriously. Illustrations are well done and funny too.

This book is missing half of the original illustrations, and the ones that it does have are tiny and in black and white...DO NOT BUY, I'm sure you can get a better printing for a similar price or not much more!

I had the book when I was 6 years old and it was the first one I could read. But I forgot so many of the Reims and it was a blast to read them and refresh my memory after all this years. the kindle edition looked exactly like the book I had all this years ago.
I did not expect to find german childhood stories on Amazon. Nice surprise, it's just like I remembered them when I was growing up. I also ordered other german childhood stories...I am just thrilled to add something from the past into my present enjoyments.
