Our homeschool curriculum recommended The Burgess Bird Book for Children by Thornton W. Burgess. We used that book for awhile. But then we stumbled upon this Old Homestead Tales series by Neil Wayne Northey, and we're happily reading it instead. The Old Homestead Tales do a better job of weaving the science facts into a story. My children are genuinely invested in the lives of the birds and animals in the stories. We bought all four books, and the only one we haven't yet read is Wild Creatures in Winter. We love these stories.

I never forgot this book, so I bought it for my children. Great story. It is simple storytelling (plain, pure, interesting) that also teaches children about wildlife and habitats. Tru-ally, tru-ally a good read and easy for 3, 4, 5, and 6-year-olds to follow along with.

Northey wrote a series of books called the Homestead Tales. The Bluebirds and Their Neighbors was read to me by my mother, over 68 yrs. ago when I was but 7 yrs old. It became my alltime favorite childhood book. It is cleverly written so as to teach the many varied characteristics of various aspects of animals and nature. I learned, by simply listening to my mother read these wonderful books a wealth of knowledge about nature.

I read one of this series to my daughter every night since she was 5. She is 10 and still wants to hear them over and over. I wish there were audiobooks of the 4 book series. Does anyone know if there is audiobook versions?

A classic that stands the test of years! This book was originally published in 1930 by Pacific Press Publishing Association and I'm glad to see has been reprinted yet again.
My grandmother purchased and read these for me while I was a child. I always remembered them with joy. Now I'm a mother of a 4 plus year old. Some of the books my son has make my brain freeze in boredom, so it was an absolute delight to dig out these books (Bluebirds is #1 of 4) and discover that I love them just as much as before.
The stories are about animals and written from the animal's viewpoint. The Bluebirds are the main attraction in this book, of course, but the story digresses to other fellow creatures on the Old Homestead. In addition to being just plain fun, educational details about animal behavior and characteristics are included.
This is a Christian book that believes that God created the world. Religion is not the point of the book, just the underpining of the storyteller's worldview.
It's a great book.

The Bluebirds and Their Neighbors is the first of four volumes of Neil Wayne Northey’s Old Homestead series. A quick and pleasant children’s book that follows the lives of numerous animals, but mostly the titular Bluebird family, around the Old Homestead that will provide enjoyment to young children either reading on their own or being read to by their parents. From the outset this book makes it clear that is coming from a Christian perspective and uses that to make comparisons for the traits animals show to that of humans in their sinful nature. However given that this book was first published in 1930, it should not be surprising and should not deter some from reading this.
