by Elizabeth Lee O'Donnell & illustrated by Karen Lee Schmidt

by Elizabeth Lee O'Donnell & illustrated by Karen Lee Schmidt. A clever variant of "The Twelve Days of Christmas": a little girl sees, on successive days at the beach, a grand accumulation of animals including "Four pipers running,/Three jellyfish,/Two pelicans,/And a little purple sea anemone. Under water, in the air, and on the beach, all are there to be counted. The sprightly text is nicely matched by the cheerful illustrations, showing a sturdy, busy child plus animals with an unusual amount of verve.

This is a wonderful book written in the style of the 12 Days of Christmas. My grandchildren sing the verses as a little girl uses her imagination to see a lot of animals at the beach. The last part is always "and a little purple sea anemone." Of course we have to find it on every page! We talk about numbers, things at the beach, weather, how that little toy plane could fly, how the toy boat could hold the little girl and a host of other questions that arise each time we read this book. Did I mention that we read it every night before bed? This book is a joy to share with children especially since they find something new to talk about at each reading. I highly recommend its purchase!

This is without a doubt one of the best counting books ever published. No matter your age or how high you can count, you'll love this book... Ms. Schmidt's illustrations are nothing less than spectacular.

I love the illustrations, and the story was neat. My SO had this book when she was a kid, now we can share the story with our little one. :)

Such a shame this book is out of print! I'm so thankful I was able to find a great copy to add to the book collection I keep for my grandchildren! A huge hit with the kids -- AND the adults! Yesterday, reading it for the first time to one of the younger grandchildren, I got asked "read it again, please, Grandma!" again and again! Jesse already knows how to find the little purple sea anemone on each page and we had great fun singing and counting together. This will be one of the things he asks me to bring each time I babysit I'm sure! This one needs to go back into print!
