Christmas at Long Pond book.

Father and son observe the plant and animal life around Long Pond before finding just the right Christmas tree. A book about a father and son who take a walk in the winter forest to bring home a tree. They encounter an owl chasing a rabbit, deer, a fox, a beaver lodge and appreciate the beauty of nature together.

Box Turtle at Long Pond. Lindsay Barrett George is widely recognized for her striking illustrations of animals, birds, and fish in their habitats. Christmas at Long Pond. by William T. George and Lindsay Barrett George

Christmas at Long Pond. A father and son pull a toboggan carrying the spruce tree they just selected and cut. Trying not to disturb the winter creatures of frozen Long Pond, they also fell an old poplar to create something for deer to eat and start the growth of new shoots by spring. While coming and going, they hear a woodpecker, see deer, notice fox prints and listen to activity within a beaver lodge.

The books should convey truth, not sentimentality or mush. I dislike stories that are constructed purely to give readers a cheap high of sentimentality. Christmas at Long Pond, by William T. George. Even if Christmas is a time of warm fuzzies, the fuzzies will last longer if they are built on truths rather than evoked by vague, atmospheric platitudes. As a father and son go out to cut down their Christmas tree, they encounter a variety of realistic wildlife. A good choice for young naturalists.

The woods are alive as a father and son make their way around Long Pond in search of the perfect Christmas tree. "The illustrations are beautiful photoreal paintings that are accurate in their detail....More than just a Christmas book, this is a celebration of the cycle of nature and its interdependent harmony."---School Library Journal.

This is my fav of the books in the "Long Pond" series written by William T. & illustrated by Lindsay Barrett George many years ago. Unfortunately, the book is no longer in print, however I was able to obtain this one from a collectible book dealer on Amazon and it was exactly as described, in excellent condition.
I read it several times to my 4-1/2 yr. old granddaughter over the Christmas Holidays and we had fun talking about the beautiful illustrations depicting many different animals in the wild; and of the Dad, his son and their dog searching for the 'perfect' tree while discussing nature. Just a lovely book!
William T. George passed in 1999, but his wife, Lindsay Barrett George continues to publish quality children's books, all of which I also highly recommend.
Great book but our 6 year old birder was brought to tears when she got to the ”piliated” woodpecker. How this mistake made it through the editors at Greenwillow Books is beyond me. It’s the pileated woodpecker to all non birders reading this review.
