Katie's joke makes Santa laugh so hard he loses a silver button and must get the button back before he can finish delivering presents

Scream_I LOVE YOU
I thought this book would be "cooler" in terms of the glow in the dark experience. One has to hold each page up to a light. The book itself is little. My kids read it once when we got it and have not asked for it again...they are 7 and 5 and avid readers.

ISBN 059046020x - Printed in the U.S.A. Marked Reading Level 2, ages 4 to 7. Paperback with glitter and glow-in-the-dark, 22 pages. Cartwheel Books; Part of the Sparkle-and-Glow series. Published by Scholastic Inc. in 1992. By Joanne Barkan, illustrated by Cristina Ong.

Katie and Ned can't sleep, but they know Santa won't come until they do, so Katie offers to tell all of her jokes so they'll wear themselves out laughing. Unfortunately, this plan backfires a bit as an eavesdropping Santa laughs so hard that he loses a button. A chase of the button ends with Santa on Katie's and Ned's front porch, where the children meet him with a needle and thread.

I'll be perfectly honest - this isn't grand literature. It's hardly even good literature. The storyline is very weak and the joke that has Santa busting a gut isn't exactly funny. But there's another side - there are, generally speaking, about 6 Christmas stories in the world and everyone does their own spin on those. This isn't one of those. Instead, it's actually original! The storyline doesn't need to be sweeping for children and what they think is funny has little relation to what an adult finds funny. So, despite my feeling unimpressed, I have to admit that I think this book will appeal to kids. Add in the sparkly bits and the glow-in-the-dark aspect and, really, it's a winner. The illustrations are fun, especially as Santa chases his button all around town, and there's no preachy moral here, just a bit of Christmas joy. The only complaint that doesn't get outweighed by its opposite is this: this might qualify as a "shaped" book because it some shaped other than rectangular. But it's not shaped like something, which is my judging criteria. Shaped like Santa? WIN! Shaped like nothing in particular? Stop trying so hard! This book has enough novelties without that.
