This book is good for older students. Preschool children not so much.

This book provides a good overview of America's Westward expansion, warts and all. It does not shy away from uncomfortable episodes in American history (the Trail of Tears, the expansion of slavery, the denial of immigration permits to Chinese...) but it offers interesting information for kids.

The book is comprehensive, spanning these topics:

Lewis & Clark
furs traders and mountain men
the Gold Rush
the Mormon Trail
the Oregon Trail
the Pony Express
frontier living
the Transcontinental Railroad
the Plains Indians
coboys and ranchers, rodeos, and country music

You can get books that treat each one of these topics quite well, but it is rare to find a book that puts it all into perspective, in 92 illustrated pages, with activities!

This book is a keeper.
