The book ha That's What Friends Are For by Florence Parry Heide is about an elephant named Theodore hurt his leg on the way to see his cousin, so he is sitting alone in the forest. I personally have never read a children's book with this message in it so I thought it was interesting how the story addressed words versus taking action. I also enjoyed the illustrations in the story with all of the vibrant colors and the simple style they are in.

With a sly wink, Florence Parry Heide and Sylvia Van Clief offer a valuable lesson about true friendship, brought to life in vivid collage by Holly Meade."If I had a bad leg," says the crab,"I would get rid of it and grow another one.""It’s nice of you to give advice," says Theodore.Theodore the elephant has hurt his leg and can’t meet his cousin at theend of the forest. What a pity! Of course, all the other animals are more than willing to give him advice. After all, that’s what friends are for - isn’tit? Florence Parry Heide’s unmistakable dry wit rings through this clevercumulative tale of a long-suffering elephant, his well-meaning friends, and a straight-shooting opossum who reminds them all what being a real friend means.

This is one of my all time favorite children's books! This is a wonderful story about Theodore, an elephant, who has hurt his leg. He wants to meet his cousin at the end of the forest. "What can I do?" he asks his friends. One by one a bird, daddy longlegs, monkey, crab, lion, and opossum give him advice on how to solve his problem. There is a lot of repetition of phrases in the book which is fun for preschoolers and anyone who reads the book aloud. The colorful illustrations by Holly Meade make the book a joy to read. This is a fun book about friendship that is sure to become a favorite of everyone who reads it.

Read it to a class of Kindergartners and they loved it. I used it with my story grammar markers and they enjoyed talking about helping Theodore solve his problem of his broken leg.

My forty year old copy was well-worn. The illustrations in this newer edition are charming and bright. The story remains as
caring and helpful as ever--especially when helping little ones learn the message of friendship.

Brilliant.
"That's What Friends Are For" is a picture book written by Florence Parry Heide and Sylvia Van Clief, with illustrations by Holly Meade.

In "That's What Friends Are For," an elephant named Theodore hurt his leg and can't walk. This is a big problem for him, as he was going to go meet his cousin, but he can't do that if he can't walk. He decides to ask his friends for help and his friends have plenty of ideas for help --- they give him advice! Whether or not any of this advice is helpful is another matter. For example, his friend who's a crab tells him that if his leg was hurt, he would cut it off and grow a new one. But Theodore can't grow a new leg. In the end, Theodore's friends discover the perfect way to help him.

The illustrations are sweet and pleasing. The characters look kind of like stuffed animals. A compelling tale about friendship.
