Synopsis: The story starts off with Karen Brewer and her friend Hannie Papadakis going to their friend Maria Kilbourne's place, to see Astrid, a Bernese mountain dog. Astrid is about to deliver puppies, and Karen doesn't want to miss out on the action. She wants to see Astrid deliver the puppies and see them grow.

But Karen feels sad because she spends time with her father only for two weekends in a month (that's four days in a month), so she would probably miss it. She realizes she misses out on a lot of things happening at the big house when she is not around. When Astrid does give birth to the puppies, she is not nearby to witness it. She misses out on other things too, like David Michael's news about being in the Wizard of Oz, or Nannie's news of being in the bowling competition.

When Karen complains about this issue to Nancy and Hannie, Ricky Torres overhears them and says that his cousins got to have equal time with their uncle and aunt after they got divorced. Karen wonders if she can try to get equal time with her mother and father.

Andrew is also upset because everyone else in the family has a pet, except him. Even though he has a gold fish, it is in the big house and he hardly gets to see it. Can he convince his family members to get a pet just for him?

Review: I thought this was a wonderfully written book because, because for a change in the series, it actually touched on some serious issues, like how custody of the children to the parents would affect the children, as well as how depression could start affecting a child's performance in school.

Yet, it still manages to keep the charm of the series with the various antics that Karen does in order to get her parents together. I also enjoyed the fact that this book provided some details about the legal procedures behind child custodians.

What I also found interesting was the significance that Karen makes between her life and Astrid's life, in that her mother and father were separated, but Astrid's puppies has to be separated from their mother a few days after their birth itself.

The illustrations provided by Susan Tang add beautifully to the book, and I enjoyed the ones where Astrid's puppies are lying next to their mother, or when we see a sad Karen falling asleep in Ms. Colman's class.

Overall, I thought this was definitely one of the better written books in the Babysitter Little Sister series, and it also changes the time line of the following books in the series, in which Karen doesn't have to spend just one weekend with her father anymore.

This book is very good. It shows how kids have a say, when it becomes in the middle of divorced parents. It shows that Karen and Andrew have feelings too.
