I read Willow King with excitement, hoping that it would not be like all the other racing books published, in which 13 year olds are racing horses (let's hope this never happens). I was happy to find that it was not, although I thought the role of the trainer of Raging Wind was a little bit of a racing book cliche. Thanks to the faith and hard work of Katie Durham, the racehorse named Willow King no longer suffers badly twisted legs. After painstaking training, mostly depicted in the award-winning prequel (Willow King), the Thoroughbred from an unknown Oregon stable finally gains the strength and heart he needs to compete in major races.

Publisher:Random House Children's Books. I read Willow King with excitement, hoping that it would not be like all the other racing books published, in which 13 year olds are racing horses (let's hope this never happens). Excitedly, I picked up Race the Wind, expecting it to be just like the first book. What I found was one that was much better. Chris Platt has stepped it up a notch with this novel. Katie, Jason, John and King are working towards going to the Kentucky Derby.

She finally fulfilled that dream with the publication of her first novel, Willow King, winner of the Golden Heart Award for best juvenile novel. Willow King: Race the Wind! is the sequel to that book.

Inspired by the true experiences of a real championship race horse, this beautiful tale is a moving celebration of the power of caring. This inspiring debut novel by a female former professional jockey and horse trainer tells the moving tale of Willow King, a colt born with crooked legs, who is saved from destruction by 13-year-old Katie Durham. Because one of Katie"s own legs is shorter than the other, she feels an immediate kinship with the imperfect little colt. With painstaking care, she pulls King through arduous training until he becomes a champion.

That’s a good sign, John said. The race didn’t take too much out of him or he’d be off his feed. Katie mixed the grain while King bobbed his head and nickered, pawing at the ground for emphasis. I think he would like to eat his food and everyone else’s, to. .She laughed as she dumped the grain into his bucket. So when exactly does he race next?. I don’t like running these young horses any closer than three or four weeks apart, but the Futurity is only a month away, and I’d like to get one more start into him before then. I guess two weeks from now.

Inspired by the true experiences of a real championship race horse, this beautiful tale is a moving celebration of the power of caring. When thirteen-year-old Katie Durham learns that the owner of a neighboring Thoroughbred farm is going to destroy a newborn colt, she rushes to save him. Although Willow King's legs are badly twisted, Katie fights for his life, begging for the chance to raise and train him. Because one of Katie's own legs is nearly an inch shorter than the other, she feels an immediate kinship with Willow King. Together, Katie and King embark on a painstaking journey of training that becomes more harrowing than Katie ever expected. Yet through it all, she remains determined to see this brave little colt grow into the beautiful Thoroughbred champion she knows he's meant to be.

A great story for the young adult and older folks too that have a love for horses. I learned several tips for breaking colts and sticking with it even when you don't want to. This story is full of unexpected happenings and suspense. It is well organized and written.

one of the best books I have read in a long time - Katie had so much courage to trade her horse for this foal and she never gave up on him - I just knew everything would all work out - and it did.
