Amy Hodgepodge by Kim Wayans and Kevin Knotts & illustrated by Soo Jeong. They nickname her Amy Hodgepodge, which supposedly shows warm acceptance of her Japanese, Korean, black and white ancestry but actually focuses a glaring narrative spotlight on an identity that should be normalized. For a talent show, the kids breezily write song lyrics and choreograph a dance; Amy conquers stage fright to sing the lead role. Jeong’s sketches feature large, manga-styled eyes. Kim N. Wayans (born October 16, 1961) is an American actress, comedian, producer, writer and director. Wayans is the sister of Keenen Ivory, Damon, S. Marlon, Shawn and Nadia Wayans. In 2008, she co wrote a series of children's books with her husband Kevin Knotts, entitled Amy Hodgepodge, about a multiracial girl adjusting to life in public school after years of homeschooling. In December 2011, she got a chance to showcase her dramatic chops with a supporting role as a mother who struggles to understand her seventeen-year-old daughter in Pariah.

Amy always wanted to be part of a team, so joining the basketball league is a dream come true! As it turns out, though, she’s not very good. Will Amy find a way to improve or will she quit?

I thought this book was extremely touching. The book really does see things through the eyes of a child. This makes it easier for kids to ask questions about serious subjects and consider the possible repercussions of their actions.

I purchased the entire set for my niece and she absolutely loved them. I gave them to her one by one and she has read them and shared them with her classmates and several parents have inquired as to where they came from and how they could get a set. I found both boys and girls find them interesting.
Being different is a theme in the Amy Hodgepodge series, initially introduced through Amy's mixed race heritage. However, Kim Wayans and Kevin Knotts do not simply repeat the same variation of being and feeling different, but expand it and develop it, drawing our attention to the most simple and most profound theme: we all want to belong.

In the first chapter, we catch up with Amy Hodges and learn how she is of mixed-race heritage, like some of her friends. We also learn that Amy feels different since she's been home-schooled and has come to Emerson Charter School just recently. These issues of difference are explored in the other books in the series, yet "Playing Games" pushes this major theme into new ground as we see Amy at the opening as the only girl who is not on the girls' basketball team.

Amy Hodgepodge is tightly written, and compelling, accurately capturing the feelings of anxiety and hope that often define growing up. Highly recommended!
