Can we bring Surfer with us? Michael asked. Sure, Sarah told him. She and Michael started their trek through their sprawling housing development. Sarah was proud of the way Michael had gotten over his fear of the rats at the dump. When the family first moved to Springville Gardens, Sarah had been terrified of the rats, too. She had been so scared of rats when she was ten years old that she wouldn’t go out of the house. That was when her father had sat down and told her all about rats.

They have just moved to Staten Island from somewhere they do not tell you they do say that it was somewhere with the sun shining bright and the smell of the mountains was very converting. Their new house is right next to the Staten Island dump where there have been rat problems for many years. The reason that the book is called RATS is because thats what the book is all about.

Rats-Paul Zindel (audio book). This was an audio book gotten for cheap from a library book sale. I never knew Paul Zindel as the Pulitzer Prize winning young adult author

Rats-Paul Zindel (audio book). I got it because I think rats are cool. I never knew Paul Zindel as the Pulitzer Prize winning young adult author. Nope, I knew him as the author of a handful of creature features which packed the gore and excitement that most YA horror material lacked ( cough Fear Street cough ).

Sarah and her brother have grown up next to the world’s largest garbage dump on Staten Island in New York City  .

Paul Zindel wrote more than 40 novels, including The Pigman, one of the best-selling young adult books of all time . Mr. Zindel taught high school chemistry for ten years before turning to writing full-time.

Paul Zindel wrote more than 40 novels, including The Pigman, one of the best-selling young adult books of all time, and Pardon Me, You’re Stepping on My Eyeball! His Broadway play, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, won the Pulitzer Prize and was produced as a film directed by Paul Newman. His work as an author brought him to exotic destinations around the world, from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to the monkey forests of Indonesia.

The city of New York is closing its biggest dump. The people who run the dump, including the father of fifteen-year-old Sarah and ten-year-old Michael, are paving over the entire dump. They will be making that spot into a city park, and the dumping of garbage there will stop. Sarah is worried when they start paving the dump, which is right next to her home. There are dangerous gasses given off by rotting garbage that could cause explosions or something just as deadly. Her father, though, reassures her that everything will be fine.

The dump is almost paved over when the rats start to appear. They are crawling out of toilets in Sarah's neighborhood. They swim by the dozens up through pool filter systems and crawl into cracks in houses. These rats are vicious, too, tearing apart the people who try to stop or to kill them. Sarah and Michael seem to have been spared because they have a pet rat, Surfer, who makes high-pitched chattering noises whenever the dump rats come near them.

Soon the rats are out of control. There seem to be millions of them, and they are smart. They are ambushing those who try to stop them. They have a plan and they have the power of communication. Sarah has done a great deal of research on rats because of her attachment to Surfer, and she thinks she might be able to help the people who are trying to get rid of the rats.

This book was fast-paced and exciting. I liked that Sarah was a strong character who was able to help herself and the entire city. I never felt like I got to know the characters very well, though. Most of them were only briefly in the story and then gone. The story was overly gruesome, too, with rats eating people alive. A final problem I had with the book was that the end seemed a little too simple. Everything was better all of a sudden, but it didn't seem like enough had changed to make it so.

REVIEW
I thought that this book was great it was very exciting and well detailed, it also keep me on my heels the whole timing because I did not know what was going to happen next. My favorite part of the book was at the beginning when the garbage man cleared the town garbage age was ruthlessly attacked and chewed to death.
Recommendations
I think that this book would be great for people who like killing and drama and cant wait for a great ending. This book keeps you waiting till the end and to find out how they come out you have to read to the end. Also I will tell people who like cruel killing and gore to read this book a hundred percent. If you dont like this stuff I am saying then if I was you I would not read this because it would not strike your interest like it did mine.

----I am read the book Rats and here are a few reasons why I like this book. The first reason why I like this book is because out of all the books I have read by this author this has been the best one so far. The second reason is that I can only read books that have action and suspense in them and to enjoy them too. The third reason is that I like books with blood and gore, and trust me this book has loads of that.
The best part of the book is at the beginning. Why? Well because that is the most gruesome part of the whole book. That is when Leroy the person that stays at the dump during the day, was shooting rats with his BB gun, but one day the rats took revenge on him and ate him completely except for the bones.
The conflict and the climax are the best story elements that are in this book. The conflict is that people have noticed an insrease in the rat population recently. I like the conflict in this book because thats when most of the people are getting scared to death by the rats. Also I like how the author expresses the characters emotions when they do get scared. The second is the climax because thats when everything breaks loose. All of the rats break out of the dump and they destroy anyone who gets in their way. I like the climax because Paul Zindel briefly describes how they escape from the dump.
