Single-page focus boxes include controversial subjects, such as Jefferson's relationship with Sally Hemmings. Unfortunately, the book is unsourced-there are not even notes for quotes. Sources are particularly missed when Mullin makes assertions about Jefferson's private thoughts and feelings: "Jefferson smiled feebly at his friends' stories, all the while feeling as though someone were cutting out his heart.

Rita Thievon Mullin portrays Jefferson’s life in a very precise and astonishing way throughout this book. Perhaps the title of the book, "Thomas Jefferson: Architect of Freedom," is somewhat misleading. I would recommend this book to all adults, and students who like to know more about ancient heroes. I was expecting the book to have an emphasis on the ideologies of Jefferson; instead, it gives an overview of Jefferson's life.

my 11 year old loves it!

My moniker betrays my love for the subject matter! I've now given this book to four different children as part of TJ-themed gifts. (Hint: 4 is just too young to be interested in a TJ-themed gift, but maybe someday). Two nephews, a 10-year-old and 9-year-old are now both hooked on Virginia's renaissance man, thanks to Rita's terrific style. Her research assistants must be amazing, too. I highly recommend this book for either "intro" or "intermediate" Jefferson fans. The adults couldn't resist picking it up, and even the senior TJ fans learned new things!
