Columbus Day, by Vicki Liestman approximate guided reading level: K. This book was a happy surprise. This is a decent chapter book for advanced readers. The authors used Columbus’ own writings as their primary source when writing the book. It tells the story of Columbus in a simple, readable way for kids – but is also very upfront about the way he and his men treated the Taino, and calls into question the very idea that Columbus is a hero. I don’t think the writing is particularly compelling or interesting, but the book is both informative and upfront. Who Was Christopher Columbus? by Bonnie Bader guided reading level: T.

I think the story is good to help explain to little ones who Columbus really was and answer their questions. I think the space reference on the last two pages is a little confusing and irrelevant. My book was also damaged on arrival. Not severely, but disappointing nonetheless.

Great! So glad to have a resource like this to teach about the reality of Columbus in a kid-friendly way.

My children and I find it refreshing to read a story that tells all sides. They talk about the good that Columbus did in finding a new discovery, and also the things he did that were unfavorable. My 9 & 6 year old love reading REAL history, not just a version that paints a hero. It is so nice for the kids to understand history as a whole, not just the happy or good parts.

This 56-page picture book for young readers tells the politically correct version of Columbus' voyages, and it is distinctly unflattering to him. It stresses the bad treatment of the Indians (I use the term because Columbus invented it) by the Spaniards, who enslaved and killed many of the natives. I have no problem with a balanced portrait of any historical figure--we all have strong points and we all have faults--and certainly mistreatment of the natives is not to be condoned. But this book presents little that's favorable to a man who is, rightly or wrongly, regarded as a national hero, and it's aimed at the youngest readers, who would almost certainly be troubled by the content. The colored illustrations by Rick Hanson are lovely and very well done. Maybe the book is best suited for children who have not yet learned to read and can simply enjoy the pictures.
