Songs in the Shade of the Flamboyant Tree: French Creole Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes makes a culture come alive and does a wonderful job of opening up the door to speak about different cultures with your children. When I first flipped through Songs in the Shade of the Flamboyant Tree I was taken in by the vivid colors of Laurent Corvaisier's illustrations. As if the book weren't enough, it also includes a mesmerizing CD featuring 30 French Creole lullabies and nursery rhymes originating from islands such as Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Reunion. Though I did not always understand what was being said I appreciated listening to the music that is a wonderful way for teaching children about cultural diversity.
