Teresa Flavin's first novel, "The Blackhope Enigma," was a very creative and ambitious fantasy, but seemed . There is still the problem in this book that while one of the protagonists is a girl, the past seems to be almost entirely male, as was the fantasy world in "The Blackhope Enigma.
Teresa Flavin's first novel, "The Blackhope Enigma," was a very creative and ambitious fantasy, but seemed rushed and diffuse. This second volume is much sharper, with a tight geographic focus and more fully-developed minor characters. Teresa Flavin has to put on her thinking cap and figure out how to break out of this trap. 2 people found this helpful.

THE BLACKHOPE ENIGMA is her first novel. Teresa Flavin lives in Glasgow, Scotland
THE BLACKHOPE ENIGMA is her first novel. Teresa Flavin lives in Glasgow, Scotland. I haven't read the book myself but my 11-year old daughter really enjoyed it. She also read the first (or second) book in the series -I can't remember which- and loved it. It's one of those series like the one about Nicholas Flamel (the Alchemyst) that are entertaining, unusual, and well-written.

Teresa Flavin blends magic, art history and mythology into a wonderful adventure. Sunni and Blaise are art students studying the Medeival painter Fausto Corvo for a school project. When Sunni, her step-brother Dean & Blaise go to The Blackhope Tower to see Corvo's famous painting The Mariner's Return to Arcadia, Dean suddenly disappears in a labyrinth in the tower. The book I read was The Blackhope Enigma by Teresa Flavin. In the beginning of the book, I wasn't too sure how much I liked it. The one thing that caught my attention was Spoiler Alert was when Dean chanted Chiaroscuro to annoy his sister, but then was transported into the painting.
An ancient painting, a magical labyrinth, and skeletons found in a locked room
An ancient painting, a magical labyrinth, and skeletons found in a locked room. For centuries, Blackhope Tower has been shrouded in intrigue, centering on a labyrinth and painting in the Mariner's Chamber.
Overall, The Blackhope Enigma is a wonderful start to a fun and exciting series. I'm looking forward to reading The Crimson Shard and hope that it can live up to what The Blackhope Enigma accomplishes. The second novel, The Crimson Shard, tells of another adventure involving Sunni and Blaise and was published in October 2011. The idea of people entering enchanted paintings is something I relish, and I found this story to be, in a word, delightful.
