Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) was an American artist. She was best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism". In 1905, O'Keeffe began her serious formal art training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then the Art Students League of New York, but she felt constrained by her lessons that focused on recreating or copying what was in nature

Georgia O’Keeffe, the pioneering modernist artist, had sensibility to spare That point is driven home by a refreshing exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum that for the first time combines O’Keeffe’s.

Georgia O’Keeffe, the pioneering modernist artist, had sensibility to spare. She lavished it on her work, of course, but she applied nearly as much to self-presentation - the clothes she wore, the places she lived and the furnishings and objects they contained.

Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist who is known for her revolutionary paintings and for being the leading figure of the art movement American Modernism, which started at the turn of the twentieth century. Her most famous artworks are those which provide a dramatically large, sensual close-up of flowers as if they are being seen through a magnifying lens. At the time this famous painting was created, many American artists in various fields were creating works based on American subjects and carving for them a unique American identity.

After their marriage, O'Keeffe became part of an inner circle of American modernist painters who frequently showed in Stieglitz's gallery. Many of the works produced by Georgia O'Keeffe during the 1920s and 1930s hover enticingly on the margins between figuration and abstraction. O'Keeffe became once again interested in architectural forms, this time focusing on details like her patio wall and door. Her 1958 painting Ladder to the Moon marked yet another shift in her work which many interpreted as a self-portrait that depicted the transitory nature of her life.

Presents the life of the twentieth-century American painter who drew much of her artistic inspiration from nature.

My 9 year old daughter needed to do a report on Georgia O'Keeffe. Shockingly, our public library had NO books geared towards her age group, and only 1 - 2 for adults. This book gave us a great overview of the artist's life and presented it at a level that my 3rd grader could comprehend.

I liked this book because it gave me a lot of helpful information to use teaching 4 year olds about O'Keeffe's life. And the kids enjoyed browsing in it.

This is also a great kid's book about O'Keeffe PLUS it let's the reader know what else was going on in the world during Georgia's life. A great reference book which further supported my daughter's report on the great office.
