Stephen Cosgrove (Goodreads Author), Robin James (Illustrator). The Serendipity books are so simple and short that such a big idea gets cramped here and has to become black and white even though there are, to my adult mind, The Amomonies are basically really long otters who, as precursors to humans, totally overfish their section of the ocean until a whale named Maui-Maui shows them this isn't sustainable.

A whale teaches the Amomonies to respect the balance of nature and take only what they need from the sea.

Incredible condition, it appears brand new!!! Wonderful momento!!!
Love this book. The order is beautiful in hard cover, with a sturdy library binding.
I read this to my children many times when they were younger, and it was one of their favorites. The lesson is a valuable one: do not waste our earth's resources! We discussed this many times ... and used it as a reminder to ourselves when we found ourselves being wasteful ("Don't be an Amomalie!").
That was years ago. But this morning, my daughter - who is now fifteen - asked me if I remember the book Maui Maui? Then she told me the story from memory ... and finished with "I loved that book!"
Clearly Maui Maui had an impact on her.

I am ordering a couple of used ones today to put in my hope chest for "future grandchildren!"
Beautifully illustrated and full of wisdom, the book, Maui-Maui, was one of the major influences which caused me to become an environmentalist.
I remember when I read it, it wasn't a totally comfortable experience (but then neither was Orwell's brilliant political allegory "Animal Farm"); the "anenomies", who over-fish the ocean in the story, can be seen as a metaphor for humans, and it was an uncomfortable experience for me to identify with these creatures in the story, when I realised that they were causing such destruction. But who ever said learning and developing wisdom were painless?
Then again, I also have fond memories of the book - which is why I wrote this review. It's a great book! So if you want to foster an environmental consciousness in a child, I say give them this book! I know I will :)
This is a great book, my 6-yr old loves it. The lesson is simple and beautifully done. there is something very peaceful and calm about how the book is written and how it flows. it's at the right level for kids and as an adult reading it the simplicity of the story makes it all the more powerful
This book teaches you not to over do it. In this book the Amomonies fish more then they should. Then the whale Maui-Maui comes and takes the Queen for a dive and shows her that there no fish left. So to find out if this book teaches them a lesson feed it.
