Martine Oborne (Author), Axel Scheffler (Illustrator). Kindergarten-Grade 2. Juice the Pig's mother worries about the amount of time he spends with his hat collection, feeling that he should be out learning about life.

Martine Oborne (Author), Axel Scheffler (Illustrator). Four incidents prove the mother pig erroneous and vindicate the young porker and his fez fetish. From a giraffe who steals his "tall, teetering, high-as-a-chimney" hat, Juice learns about determination. Bravery becomes the issue with a crocodile, as he crawls into the reptile's mouth to retrieve his "fierce, pointy, snap-your-tail-off" hat.

Scolded by his mother for his vain attention to a large hat collection and for not learning life's lessons, a piglet proves the hats teach him determination, bravery, patience, and kindness

My children are 10 and 12 now, but they still remember many, many fond evenings with this book. Juice the pig is a character they can really empathize with, because circumstances require him to learn how to be determined, patient, and brave (he has to find these characteristics in himself to get his hat back). Then, in the end, he chooses to be kind, too, and he learns how nice it feels. I must say that there are many children's books that I half dreaded reading again and again and again, but this was one that I always loved when the kids pulled off the shelf.

This book is one of my daughter's favorites--we've had this one since she was two (she's four now), and it gets read at least a couple of times a week.
The basic concept is that Juice is a pig who loves hats...but he keeps losing them! In getting them back, he learns about bravery, patience, and kindness, among other things. It sounds odd, I know, but it's fun.
