Written entirely in short phrases ‘spoken’ by the various animals, the text is breezy and light, switching quickly from one pup to another. Our almost two year old granddaughter LOVES dogs, so I purchased this book for her. I read it and read it, read it and read it. She never tires of the great illustrations which are very realistic and the simple, sparse text is great for her. Our four year old granddaughter also requested numerous rereadings, asking, "Do dogs really talk?" and "Which dog said that?" Would it have helped the 'story' to have those questions answered? Maybe, but it would also have taken away the opportunity for the child to attach the conversation as the pages turn. There is a storyline, as the dogs arrive, play, leave and look forward to returning. We liked that the inside covers illustrate an aerial view of the dog park (it's fun to try and pick out the various pages of the story on the map and imagine where the mud might be), but I wish the breeds had been listed on a back page or the back cover (perhaps with the featured dog next to the name), since once the jacket's off, you're on your own to identify them.

This will delight any child that loves animals. It has clear, photo-like illustrations. You can feel the movement and slobbery kisses. There are only a few words per page.
