I purchased these because I was looking for something with pictures of real animals, not cartoonish versions. As other reviewers have mentioned, the pictures are beautiful. You can start earlier with these by introducing one animal every few days and teaching the name and sound the animal makes. Great for familiarizing with animals so when they go for that first zoo trip they can recognize some animals. The only con is that the cards aren't very thick. If you plan on always holding them and not allowing your child to, this won't be an issue. Realistically, these are large cards and your kid will be excited to grab and touch the pictures...and end up bending and creasing them.

Other reviewers are right when they talk about how stunning the photos are on these cards. Beautiful photography and a great selection of animals. We're pretty much focused on the animals at our local zoo right now (tiger, elephant, etc.), but this will be a nice learning tool for quite some time. The cards are a nice glossy stock material but I agree that if you plan to leave your baby with them unattended, a quick laminating job would be your best bet to keep them in tip top shape. Another perk is the information listed on the back of each card. Sometimes I get tired of hearing myself talk and run out of topics to discuss in my one-sided conversations. Having the talking points on the back of these cards gives me more to say and I find it educational as well.

So far, we've gotten our baby several of the titles in the Baby Einstein series, and they've been quite a success in our household. I'd read about their discovery cards many times, but it wasn't until recently that it finally struck me what the deal was with the cards.

Babies love images and books. And the destiny of most books in the hands of babies is to end up broken into individual pages... which they still love "turning" and flipping to see them once and again. Baby Einstein figured this out, and created the discovery cards. This set in particular contains 29 cards with beautiful pictures of animals. In the back, they contain tips and insights about each animal, so as you give you ideas of things to tell your baby about the animal as you're going through them.

It's a simply concept that makes perfect sense, and our son loves them, so I love them too! Plus they're VERY educational. Get your child your set of Animal Discovery Cards and you will see what I mean.

Great images. The cards depict photographs of animals in natural settings. I give them 4 stars for that reason alone. The cards themselves are somewhat flimsy. You have to supervise your kids with these or they won't last long. My 16-month-old twins prefer the DK Publishing Touch and Feel Cards to these cards, mostly because the DK Publishing cards come in a flip-top, velcro box. One of my girls can sit for 10 or 15 minutes, an eternity in toddler time, just taking the DK Publishing cards out of the box and putting them back in. So you may want to consider those as well. But these are pretty good.

The cards have nice pictures of animals on them but my 1-yr old granddaughter is kind of bored by this set. Maybe she'll grow into more interest for them. I have a set of Language Discovery cards that she loves but the animal set she wants me to hurry through them. Also there were three duplicate cards in my set - a horse, caterpillar and bear. She plays with those separately. And the extra blank cards in the set we use to put stickers on. Not my favorite set of cards.

I love the pictures... I just wish they were a little more durable so I could use them more regularly with my 15 month old son. He just enjoys trying to bend and crinkle paper too much, so he ends up mangling these cards, if left to play with them unsupervised.

For an older child, or one not as bent on destruction, or a younger baby to look at, the pictures are awesome and colorful. Great depictions of animals!

The only reason I cannot give this product 5 stars is because 2 of the cards (the sea turtle and squirrel) are missing the words printed on the picture side. After making several phone calls, the printing error will be corrected when the next "batch" of cards are printed. I was told the date when that would happen is unknown. The publishing company offered to send me a different set of cards free of charge for the mishap. If anyone else has experienced this, you may want to call the publishing company sooner than later. As of 07/01/07, Baby Einstein Discovery Cards will be published by a different company and it is unknown how the next company will handle the problem.

The cards have amazing photography and are extremely durable for my 19 mos old daughter's hands. She loves these cards!
Awesome very clear photographs of different animals. My son loved these when he was about 12-24 months. He did like to put them in his mouth and bend them quite a bit so they looked a little rough after a little while. I also liked how there was a blank card included and we used this to make our own card with a picture of the family pets on it.
