Read this before you get a dog or pup.

Funny and ruefully true. The real dope on the love--and the devastation--a puppy will bring to your life. Absolutely worth it.

I bought this book because the excellent The Art of Raising a Puppy (Revised Edition) recommended it, and I thought, how could I go wrong with Maurice Sendak? But the book was just plain WEIRD (even for Maurice Sendak). I don't think Some Swell Pup really prepared my kids to get a puppy. Yes, the illustrations of the puppy's pee and poop had them laughing hysterically (they're 6 and 9, what did I expect?), and the book's main message was good: to be kind and gentle to a puppy and don't shout or yell at it. But I found the same message delivered more effectively in other books: A Dog's Best Friend: An Activity Book for Kids and Their Dogs,It's a Dog's Life: How Man's Best Friend Sees, Hears, and Smells the World and Everything Dog: What Kids Really Want to Know About Dogs (Kids' FAQs). There are also lots of fictional works that can help your kids think about dog's needs, feelings, etc. My kids and I (even their Dad) loved A Dog's Life: Autobiography of a Stray. We listened to the audio book.
