I've spent countless hours reading through the many innovative, mouthwatering recipes.

I can't say how much I love the accompanying stories - they add so much to this book.

When I'm not trying a recipe from it, I am reading this before bedtime, or whenever I'm having trouble sleeping - it's that comforting!

A Cup of Comfort Cookbook: Favorite Comfort Foods to Warm Your Heart and Lift Your Spirit [Paperback] by Jay Weinstein

This book was in the bargain/clearance bin of a local BigLots in Tacoma years ago. Having caught my eye with the homespun title and images of warm soup and savory pies, I bought it.

Written in the 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' genre, it's down home, inspirational and somewhat emotional-laden stories is sure to grasp the attention of those who love the Chicken Soup series' books.

The recipes are written by every day people who send in their family heirloom recipes to be included in the series. The recipes aren't healthy and, include fattening, starchy and high carbohydrate ingredients and full of sodium. But they do sound comforting and filling, nonetheless. They really are not for those of us with diabetes, heart disease and other health issues. The stories really do capture your heart and you feel like you're sitting down with the recipe author.

The writer/compiler, Jay Weinstien, knew how to compile the stories as well as the recipes to ensure an even flow of continuity throughout the book. Recipes and chapters are well-placed, giving a a good feel for a cookbook, as well as a compendium of down home stories.

I would give the recipes themselves a 3.5 (mostly unhealthy recipes) and a 4 for heartwarming stories.

Step into comfort food that is not only satisfying to the palate but soothes the soul and spirit. This book is especially endearing at this time of year when one turns to thoughts of cooking special food when coming together with loved ones.
I had the pleasure of hearing Lynn Ruth Miller's humorous story about her mother's Hanukkah blintzes at a reading in Oakland where I was also on the panel as a contributor to another book in the Cup of Comfort series. So much goes into the preparation of food than just ingredients. These recipes reflect the history, family lore, adventures, culture and of course the doses of love that are necessities in good food.
My daughter was flipping through the book checking out recipes for Thanksgiving and was constantly reading out loud the anecdotes and heartfelt stories. Dutch Breakfast Bread and Abuelita's Rice Pudding are just two examples of the richness of recipes and stories in this contribution. These recipes offer a pinch of faith, a dash of strength, a tablespoon of love and a cup of comfort, a gift to America.
