It is hard to go wrong with TOH cookbooks. Nor does this one disappoint. This is not for the rarefied, what we used to call "yuppie" consumer, but for the man or woman who works, makes less than 6 figures and has a family to feed in one hour. You have come to the right place with Taste of Home. The pictures are extremely helpful in letting you know if the dish will appeal to you and your loved ones. If not, what is the point? A great bonus is that the cookbooks are available at an extremely reasonable price. I am not going to make every single recipe here, but there are ideas aplenty.

I bought this originally as a gift for my mom, who is a "down-home...never measures...never follows a recipe...and food is always fabulous cook." She wanted some new ideas and she got them from this book. While skimming through the book to purchase for her, several recipes caught my eye...so I grabbed a second copy for me. 6 months later a childhood friend happened to be at my parents house visiting when she picked up the book and fell in love. She copied a few favorites and for weeks she called me requesting that I send her pix of specific recipes from the book. Unfortunately, the store I bought the cook books from did not have anymore of these so I ordered one for her through Amazon.

This book is awesome. I love taste of home. Their instructions have always been easy to follow, but this book takes this a step further by explaining specific tools and techniques!

I'm not a beginner cook by any means but this book is great for beginners and experienced cooks. Don't be fooled by the "cooking school" designation. It's got absolutely wonderful recipes and tons of tips throughout. It shows you step-by-step how to do certain things, like make chicken cordon bleu or julienne a pepper. There are pictures on every page (not necessarily of every recipe, but most of them). It's got a wonderful range of recipes but none of them are very complicated or require exotic ingredients. Just good old fashioned home cooking, the type of recipes that would please most anyone.

"Taste of Home: Cooking School Cookbook" is one of the best "beginner" cookbook I have come across, having great advice for stocking up your kitchen with cookware and food, and including a lot of helpful "How To" sections on everything from the basics of preparing meats and vegetables, to setting up home bar for entertaining. I also like the wide range of recipes and the accompanying full color photos that show you what the dish should look like, as well illustrating the techniques in the "How To" sections.

The chapters include "Appetizers", "Drinks", "Better Than Take Out" (my favorite chapter), "Soups", "Beef & Pork", "Poultry", "Seafood", "Vegetarian", "Side Dishes", "Breakfast", and "Baking". The recipes are nicely laid-out and the instructions are detailed and easy to follow. A very nice touch is that more advanced techniques are show in sidebar "How To" segments along with the recipes. Each recipe also includes the "Per Serving" nutritional information, including Calories, Protein, Carbs, Fat, Sodium, Cholesterol, and Fiber, which is important to me since I try to follow a low carb diet.

The last chapter, "Guide to Cooking With Popular Herbs", was a very pleasant surprise and is a nice bonus. This chapter lists twelve popular herbs and where they lend themselves to improve the flavor of a dish.

This is an outstanding cookbook that can actually teach new cooks techniques that might take years to learn form other sources, and seasoned cooks will enjoy the wide range of practical recipes! I was actually provided a review copy of this book by the publisher and liked it so much that I bought an additional copy as a gift for my daughter.

Highly Recommended!

I love to cook, and I LOVE cookbooks. There is nothing better than thumbing through the pages, but from a practicality standpoint, it makes more sense to order them on my iPad now. It took me HOURS to scroll through this, and I love all of the "helpful hints" and instructional inclusions. There is a full spectrum of recipes and it is well organized with pictures for I believe every single recipe. I think that's huge. If you've never made something before, you at least want an idea of how it should look, so I was excited to have the visuals in addition to the step by step instructions, complete with substitutions. My goal for 2014 is to try at LEAST two new recipes per week, and this will certainly be a cookbook from which I will be experimenting.

I like the look of the book, the various recipes, the photos for every meal, and the way that it's organized.

This book is suited for those who are beginning to cook (high school graduates, newly weds, etc.) What I especially like about this book is that the recipes are interesting and it doesn't require expert skills to make! The ingredients mentioned are easy to come by too (no need to travel to an "ethnic" supermarket-- I'm not saying exotic supermarkets are bad but I know for some folks the trek to a new place can be a bit daunting, at least try going there once).

So again, the recipes are delicious, interesting, and easy to make. You need to get this book for a beginning cook.
