If you aren't acquainted with Joyce Goldstein's cookbooks, you should be. Her
love of Mediterranean style foods and cooking is apparent in every recipe.
Each has been tested against her remarkable palate, and, for that reason,
reliably delivers delectable dishes. Even an amateur chef like myself can
turn out great results with Joyce's help. Williams-Sonoma publishes pretty good
cookbooks, but for the most part only those with Joyce's touch are truly outstanding.

I find I am in a rut, got several soups I like and will stick with them. Beef and Barley, French Onion, Broccoli, Egg Drop and a version of Italian Wedding Soup with chicken broth, carrots, celery, onion, kale and turkey sausage balls. I like the Cooking Light Soup Book and Soup and Bread Cookbook by Beatrice Ojakangas.

A great recipe book for soups. I always love William-Sonoma books. I highly recommend the seller fast delivery and nicely packaged. Thank you.

We have used this cookbook for years and have enjoyed many recipes. This purchase was a gift which I'm sure will be used for many years to come.

I kept borrowing this book from a library and enjoyed cooking the recipes. Then I saw it on Amazon for a really great price, so I ordered it. It arrived in a perfect condition really fast. I will definitely use this vendor again.

"Soup for Supper" by Joyce Goldstein was part of the "Lifestyles" series of cookbooks that Williams-Sonoma published in the late 1990s. I missed it at the time, but, when I was recently browsing Williams-Sonoma's web site for recipes, I noticed that I was downloading an awful lot of recipes from this book. So I decided to buy it. I'm glad I did, as some recipes in the book are not available on the web site. There are 45 recipes in total; 30 are for soups. The cookbook intends to provide recipes for the whole meal, with soup as the main course, so there are 5 additional recipes each for salads, breads/sandwiches, and desserts at the back. The organization is a little awkward, as there is nothing to separate the other recipes from the soups.

The soup recipes don't seem to be organized by theme or ingredients, but there is considerable variety in ingredients and ethnic inspirations. Of 30 recipes, 7 are vegetarian (including recipes in which vegetable broth can easily be substituted for chicken broth), 4 are vegan, 4 contain chicken or turkey, 6 contain seafood, and 9 contain red meat. With 11 potentially vegetarian recipes total, "Soup for Supper" is a good find for vegetarians as well as carnivores. The recipes aren't quick; I estimate that the average cooking or preparation time is one hour. I just made the Asian Shrimp & Noodle Soup, which took longer. The Avocado Soup with Shrimp and Salsa is the best avocado soup I've had. It took less than an hour, but it's a cold soup.

I've only made 3 soups from this book so far, but I have a long list I want to try. The inspirations for these recipes come from Asian, Eastern European, Latin American, and New American cuisines -and even from some old American "comfort food". But, in many cases, I think the greatest inspiration came from fresh, seasonal ingredients, which I love. I gravitate toward recipes that bring out the flavors of the fresh ingredients, and these fill the bill. I'm a bit of a soup connoisseur. Soups are my favorite course to make and to consume, and there are plenty of high-quality recipes here to keep me satisfied. Thanks to Joyce Goldstein and Williams-Sonoma for that. "Soup for Supper" is a welcome addition to my recipe collection, and I heartily recommend it to soup-lovers.

My favorites from this book are: Roasted Butternut Squash Soup; Romaine, Gorgonzola, and Walnut Salad; Asian Shrimp and Noodle Soup; and the Butternut Chive Biscuits. Easy-to-follow recipes worth repeating often.

This book has it all. From how to present, prepare, and what to serve with it. There are recipes for light desserts, salads, breads and sandwiches. The soups are delicious and the recipes are easy to follow. Check it out - yo and everyone you feed will be glad you did.
