Predominantly vegetarian, Anna Thomas was initially an antidote to the smug, earnest and nearly inedible vegetarian cuisine that predominated in the 1970's at places like Greens and The Source. Her recipes had style even if they were labor-intensive. Over the years, there are recipes from that book that I return to again and again.

This is a beautiful cookbook! I am so amazed at all the critics! One reviewer said it's too healthy, not enough butter, cream and cheese, another said too much cheese! Sheesh! Another complained no page numbers for recipes.....there are, btw! So many veggies complaining about ONE turkey recipe by her husband. To me, it's not a big deal, but I guess if you are veggie on high moral grounds, it might bother you.

In any case, these are lovely recipes, some a little on the complex side, but many simple and easy ones, too. If you're new to cooking, some of the menus may take awhile to prepare, but (obviously) you can easily mix and match dishes based on your tastes and available time. To clarify, she has the recipes categorized under menus, one reads- "A Casserole Supper" and has: rice and corn salad, hubbard squash flan, simple chipotle sauce, tortillas and fresh fruit in season. Another section "Four Easy Soup Dinners" and one of them reads: Lentil soup, jalapeno and cheese cornbread OR pumpernickel bread and a slice of smoked cheese. In her cornbread recipe, she points out that jalapenos lose a lot of their fire when baked in a batter, which could be very helpful to someone not familiar w cooking them and afraid of their heat. Another recipe calls for haricots verts in a salad, and she explains that they are important in the salad and you shouldn't sub regular larger and tougher green beans. Another reviewer complained about her "snobbiness" with this comment, but she's simply explaining you will get sub par results w a regular green bean. As a cook, I appreciate these comments and tips. Another menu--Rustic Autumn dinner: fresh herb salad, roasted autumn veggies, brown and wild rice pilaf, plum and walnut galette. Each menu is accompanied by more description, anecdotes or tips, and she then also has some tip or anecdote before the actual recipe. It's very personalized and an obvious labor of love. It's an interesting cookbook that I found fun to read, with good direction in her recipes.

Intriguing recipes with a variety of easy to obtain ingredients. Balanced, healthy eating of vegetables and grains that you can incorporate in your non-vegetarian diet, and reduce you meat protein intake. I will probably never order a "good used" cookbook again. This one arrived dirty with food smudges on the cover and a few of the pages. I was too busy to return it, cleaned it up and use it with caution around food preparation.

I have been using a paperback version of this book since the mid-1980's. It has fabulous recipes. (I particularly like asparagus cheese pie, bryani, and mac & cheese.) It is a cookbook that it would be hard to live without. Unfortunately, the binding on my paperback edition is weak. I bought the hardcover edition in anticipation that I would have to replace the paperback. The pages are much more yellowed and dry than those of the paperback, but the binding is quite strong.

There are very few cookbooks I recommend without hesitation. This is one of them. It deserves the highest praise, which to my mind is that you can make any recipe in this cookbook for the first time and trust that the result will be tasty and appealing. That alone is rare enough, but the print is reasonably big, the directions are clear and sensible, and the drawings are charming. It's a great shame that this cookbook has not been reprinted. Get it while you can!

I debated between the old version and this updated version. I am glad I went with this one (though admittedly don't have the old one for comparison). I am using 3 of the recipes in the Indian Luncheon section for my Gourmet group this month. They are easy to follow and each has been truly wonderful. The cardamom ice cream is terrific; my 8 year old likes to warm it up in the microwave and eat it like a custard -- sooo soothing. Apparently the original version is supposed to have greater use of heavy cream etc.. Well, this one uses it too, and I wouldn't want any more than is used in this book! I just don't eat as 'heavy' as I used to...

I had this cookbook back in the early 1980's. I loved it then. My husband was decluttering a few years ago and threw out most of my cookbooks. There were only two of the oldies that I really missed and just had to have back and this is one of them. So I bought it again. So much vegetarian food is healthy, for sure, but not luxurious, comforting food I look forward to. This cookbook has some wonderful recipes. It does use dairy. One of my all time favorite recipes ever is Dutch Cheese and Potato Soup. It's fabulous comfort food!

Delicious sounding vegetarian recipes, little bit fancy even so that is nice. So many, many different kinds of recipes from all over. I can’t wait to start trying them out. I bought it used, it was in great condition so I will definitely be buying from this seller again.
Filled with lots of useful recipes suited for vegetarians, I highly recommend this one. It's filled with meals for soups, entrees and more. There are lots of easy to make vegetarian recipes.
