Alix Kates Shulman (born August 17, 1932) is an American writer of fiction, memoirs, and essays, as well as one of the early radical activists of second-wave feminism.

Alix Kates Shulman (born August 17, 1932) is an American writer of fiction, memoirs, and essays, as well as one of the early radical activists of second-wave feminism. She is best known for her bestselling debut adult novel, Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen (Knopf, 1972), "one of the first novels to emerge from the Women's Liberation Movement" (Oxford Companion to Women's Writing).

At twenty, Alix Kates Shulman left her native Cleveland, Ohio, for the excitement of New York's Greenwich Village. In the following decades she became a political activist, feminist, teacher, and award-winning writer. She has written fourteen books, including five novels, three memoirs, three books for children, two books on the anarchist Emma Goldman, an essay collection, and numerous short stories and essays.

Robin, a runaway teenager, arrives in New York's main bus terminal where Prince, a pimp, marks her as his next meal ticket, and Owl, a bag lady, mistakes her for her long lost daughter. Their lives become inextricably enmeshed against a seething urban backdrop in this novel about New York street life.

Alix Kates Shulman (b. 1932) is the celebrated author of fourteen books, including the bestselling novel Memoirs of an Ex–Prom Queen (1972), which established her as a primary figure in feminism’s second wave. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Shulman studied philosophy at Columbia University and received an MA at New York University. She became a political activist, joining the Congress of Racial Equality in 1961 and the Women’s Liberation Movement in 1967. Her other novels include Burning Questions (1978), On the Stroll (1981), In Every Woman’s Life. 1987), and Ménage (2012).
