Odessa is run by gangsters, and, interestingly, they are Jewish gangsters, Jews making up the second most populous demographic of the town. By 1938, they were the most populous demographic. Let’s talk about Benya Krik, says the narrator at the beginning of How It Was Done in Odessa. Let’s talk about his lightning-quick rise and his terrible end. And we’re hooked. The book is divided into two sections, the first being about the gangsters (whose capacity for violence and gift for retribution will make you whistle in admiration), the second about Babel’s childhood.

Isaac Emmanuilovich Babel (Russian: Исаак Эммануилович Бабель, IPA: ; 13 July 1894 – 27 January 1940) was a Russian writer, journalist, playwright, and literary translator. He is best known as the author of Red Cavalry, Story. He is best known as the author of Red Cavalry, Story of My Dovecote and The Odessa Tales-stories from the life of Jewish gangsters from Odessa led by Benya Krik (prototype – Mishka Yaponchik). He has been acclaimed as "the greatest prose writer of Russian Jewry".

BENYA KRIK, THE GANGSTER AND OTHER STORIES, by Isaac Babel. In 1955 Anthony Boucher wrote here that the book is ''often subtle and interesting'' but ''also a bit sketchy and first draftish. Ten short stories under three headings - ''Benya Krik, the Gangster,'' ''A Jewish Boy'' and ''The Revolution'' - by the protege of Maxim Gorky who died mysteriously after being arrested by Stalin's police in 1939. The collection was originally published in 1948. Nevertheless, he said, ''if 'The Cellar' falls below some other Smith novels, it still earns high marks as an understated study in intimate domestic evil.

Isaac Babel was born in 1894 in that part of Odessa called Moldavanka. A protege and friend of Maxim Gorky, Babel came to prominence in the early 1920's with the publication of Red Cavalry, but as Stalin's repressive regime made the position of the creative writer increasingly difficult during the next decade, Babel published less and less. In 1939, he was arrested, and his papers, which were seized by the police, vanished with him. The charge against him is not known. A certificate delivered to the family shortly after Stalin died gives March 17, 1941, as the data of Babel's death, but mentions neither its cause nor where it had occurred. He was "rehabilitated" in 1954. His complete works were re-issued in Moscow in 1957.
