Shannon's Way. Born in Cardross, Scotland, A. J. Cronin studied at the University of Glasgow. In 1916 he served as a surgeon sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteers Reserve, and at the war’s end he completed his medical studies and practiced in South Wales. My thoughts were bitter as I walked down the dark, dripping avenue of Fenner Hill, crossed the crowded thoroughfare of Pardyke Road-where, beneath misty arc lights, the trams clanged and bounded over greasy cobblestones-then entered the drab district of Kirkhead.

Shannon Sharpe (born June 26, 1968) is a former American football tight end who played for the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL), as well as a former analyst for CBS Sports on its NFL telecasts. He is a TV presenter who co-hosts Skip and Shannon: Undisputed with Skip Bayless. Sharpe was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 6, 2011.

The book is a feast of composite layering, as in for example, ‘Morning (With William Bronk)’ which starts ‘The world, what we took, for the world,, is breaking. Breaking!’ and ends ‘And we are, equally alive. One feels blessed to encounter such acute brevity and depth.

I had the pleasure of hearing Shannon Tharp read poems from The Cost of Walking in New York in October. The room fell completely silent as she read. A sudden attentiveness was palpable as the audience awakened to the gravity of her words and to the voice of these poems- one that is careful but insistent and vital. It’s clear that Tharp listens to the sounds of the world, the sounds of her words, and to the weather within, as John Taggart writes. The poems in Tharp’s first full-length collection confront various physical landscapes and climates.
