Born in Massachusetts in 1830, Emily Dickinson composed over 1770 poems; but apart from her closest friends, no-one knew she was writing at all. Only after her death was her astonishing output discovered and published. A reclusive figure for much of her life, few could have imagined the range of her subjects, the intensity of her imagination or the powerful delicacy of her writing. Emily Dickinson is one of America’s greatest writers.

Emily Dickinson is a delight to read. Her poems feel light and airy and with grace and beauty she paints little pictures with her words.

Summary- At the beginning of this book there is a short introduction about Emily Dickinson, her life, habits and style of poetry. This book contains 36 poems some of which are riddles. On some pages there are definitions of words that young people may not be familiar with. Each poem is vivid with descriptions and imagination. Sunsets are not merely sunsets but a woman sweeping the sky with colored brooms. Emily Dickinson is a delight to read.

Emily Dickinson is one of America’s greatest and most original poets of all time. She took definition as her province and challenged the existing definitions of poetry and the poet’s work.

The Great Poets book. Ms. Gallagher has a childish voice, so that took some getting used to as well. My favourite poems were the ones about the seasons and nature. After she studied at the Amherst Emily Dickinson was an American poet who, despite the fact that less than a dozen of her nearly eighteen hundred poems were published during her lifetime, is widely considered one of the most original and influential poets of the 19th century.

Emily Dickinson wrote more than one thousand seven hundred poems. There are three books of her letters. And there are many books about her life. SHIRLEY GRIFFITH: Some historians wish that Emily Dickinson’s poems had reached the best American writers of her day: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau or Walt Whitman. These men could have overlooked her strange way of living to see only her ability. Historians also say it is possible that she chose to write to someone like Higginson so she would not be understood.

Though principally known as the miniaturist in American poetry, Emily Dickinson produced a remarkably wide body of work - some concentrating on acute observations and some on bons mots. Full of wit and sensitivity, she generally appears in anthologies but this generous collection shows that she is a poet to be taken seriously.

I continue to enjoy this CD. The selection and arrangement of poems is excellent. Theresa Gallagher does a really fine reading--light, not heavy. I agree with another reviewer, though, that the pauses marking off the poems are too brief. But perhaps one can take this as the stream of a highly intelligent and perceptive consciousness communicating.
Mr.Death
I must say that I was very disappointed by the quality of the interpretation. Emily Dickinson was a deeply anxious, secluded and depressed woman. Her poems speak of it. Unfortunately, though the actress reading the poems may very well be talented in her own right, I do not believe that she was a good choice for reading Dickinson's poetry. The voice of the actress is rather too high-pitched, very chirpy and often borders on being nauseating in its exuberance. An actress with a deeper voice in the lower range of the female vocal register would certainly have been preferable. Someone with a voice like that of Judy Dench or Helen Mirren would have been ideal. Besides, the interpretation of the poems also lacks understanding of Dickinson's character. Sad and troubling poems are being read in a shallow and rather silly tone which I could not take seriously. It was very difficult for me to get through the whole recording.
