Ann Keniston and Jeffrey Gray have provided us with what may be the definitive representation of the 21st century's troubled first decade. a tradition revived after 9/11 and reinforced by subsequent economic, political and natural disasters. Ann Keniston, Jeffrey Gray. This anthology of poetry collects 21st century American works by both established and emerging poets that deal with the public events, government policies, ecological and political threats, economic uncertainties, and large-scale violence that have largely defined the century to date. Jeffrey Gray and Ann Keniston. This collection follows ourThe New American Poetry of Engagement: A 21 st Century Anthology(2012), which was constructed around the premise that the United States is witnessing a resurgence of public poetry, with poets of all types writing about concerns beyond the personal, epiphanic, or aesthetic. In that book we noted not only the fact of this resurgence but some of its features

Books of the century so far Composite: PR. Dazzling debut novels, searing polemics, the history of humanity and trailblazing memoirs. Read our pick of the best books since 2000. Read an interview with the author of our No 1 book. Read Ali Smith on Autumn. Read David Mitchell on Cloud Atlas. This operatically harrowing American gay melodrama became an unlikely bestseller, and one of the most divisive novels of the century so far. One man’s life is blighted by abuse and its aftermath, but also illuminated by love and friendship. Some readers wept all night, some condemned it as titillating and exploitative, but no one could deny its power.

This anthology of poetry collects 21st century American works by both established and emerging poets that deal with the public events, government policies, ecological and political threats, economic uncertainties, and large-scale violence that have largely defined the century to date. But these 138 poems by 50 poets do not simply describe, lament, or bear witness to contemporary events; they also explore the linguistic, temporal, and imaginative problems involved in doing so. In this way, the anthology offers a comprehensive look at contemporary American poetry, demonstrating that poets are moving at once toward a new engagement with public concerns and toward a focus on the problems of representation. A detailed introduction by the editors along with poetics statements by many of the poets add depth and context to a book that will appeal to anyone interested in the state and evolution of contemporary American poetry.

Although I would have liked to see more from poets like Forche, Shihab Nye, Olds and C.D. Wright. Although Martha Collins, and others, were completely overlooked... although the introduction is a bit academic-- it was good to see so many great poets well represented, and it was an honor to be introduced to some poets, new to me, and read their important works and statements.

Features more contemporary writers than most anthologies of this ilk. Introduced me to work of Ben Lerner whom, I discovered, has a remarkable mentality. "Didactic Elegy"--I think title's correct--rearranged some brain cells.

This is a great collection of poetry from poets you may not have heard from. Worth double the price.
