Maurice Lindsay was an admired presence within the often fractious world of Scottish literature for more than 60 years. He published prose, his own poetry and influential anthologies of Scottish verse. He also worked as a journalist and broadcaster. Lindsay attended Glasgow Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music where he showed his talent as a violinist. He joined The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in the Second World War but an injury exempted him from active service and, like many out-of-place intellectuals in the Forces, he found an intelligence berth in the War Office.
