I have loved every James Richardson book that I have read in the past and this one started out so strongly that I thought it would continue the trend.

National Book Award Finalist for Poetry (2010). I have loved every James Richardson book that I have read in the past and this one started out so strongly that I thought it would continue the trend. The first section of the book is brilliant, in my opinion - moving and thoughtful. And then came the aphorisms. In the past, I have really enjoyed Richardson's aphorisms but this time around, they didn't hit the same high notes for me.

National Book Award Finalist Book of the Year honors from Publishers Weekly "As if hurled from a pitching mound, James Richardson's aphorisms and images approach the reader like fastballs, only to curve at the last second, painting the corners of the reader's mind with wisdom and delight. In By the Numbers Richardson dips into an expansive repertoire of approaches and shows excellent command, as he illuminates the commute between the ordinary and the mystical.

This collection of James Richardson's poetry reveals him to be one of the most notable poets of our time. In poems such as "Emergency Methods" and "Bit Parts" we hear echoes of Prufrock. "Vectors 3.0" stretches the reader's understanding of poetry in the same way that contemporary videos stretch understandings of personal expression. The aphorisms are glimpses, brief illustrations that express feelings, moods, and fleeting expressions. Somehow, parts create more of a whole than one expects. This is poetry that transcends, as poetry is meant to do.
