Peter Broome, who has died aged 81, was a gifted teacher, communicator and literary critic who specialised in modern French poetry, writing important books on Charles Baudelaire, Henri Michaux and other literary figures. He was also a poet and collaborated with a number of French contemporaries, translating the work of André Frénaud and Louise Herlin. Peter was born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, to Walter Broome, a warehouseman, and his wife, Lily (nee Jepson)

Henri Michaux (French: ; 24 May 1899 – 19 October 1984) was a highly idiosyncratic Belgian-born poet, writer, and painter who wrote in French. He later took French citizenship. His body of work includes poetry, travelogues, and art criticism.
Peter Broome is a well-known specialist of modern French poetry, with major books on Baudelaire, Henri Michaux, André Frénaud and Louise Herlin.
Henri Michaux was a Belgian-born French painter, poet, and writer. Henri Michaux produced small-scale artworks in India ink, watercolour, oil, and acrylic. In his oeuvre, he represented the style of Tachisme. Michaux worked as a merchant seaman. In 1930-1931 he visited Japan, China and India. The trip resulted in his book A Barbarian in Asia. Oriental culture became one of the biggest influences in his oeuvre. The philosophy of Buddhism, as well as Oriental calligraphy, later became principal subjects of his poems and inspired many of his drawings.
