When one old woman in a Southern California nursing home challenges another elderly resident to ask her family if they can visit for the holidays, the family and the old ladies learn the true spirit of Christmas

This sweet, short read is like a piece of chocolate silk pie: able to be finished in one sitting, rich enough to be completely satisfying, leaves one knowing they'll eventually go back for seconds. The premise is simple: a conversation between two old women who live in a nursing home and don't expect to see their far-away families that Christmas dream of being taken in by a family for just the one day. Skeptical Florence bets kind-hearted Myrna that if she were to call up any of her grown children and ask them to take in a stranger for Christmas, they'd say no. So Myrna begins to call up her four children and ask if they'd take in a made-up friend whom she says lives in a nursing home in their area, first telling favorite childhood stories about each one before calling them up, full of faith in the goodness of humanity. After unbearable disappointment, the novella wraps up like a beautiful Christmas gift which I plan to reopen for many years to come.
I never get tired of this well-defined story...and it never fails to be in goosebumps to my arms and tears to my eyes. I've read it or listened to it ever since it came out 29 or so years ago. It's a must for her you into the TRUE Christmas spirit!
