Paul Smith is one of the finest writers about this era. Not only does he bring the city to life with a few pen strokes for us, so the characters and their situations live in our minds . Smith also wrote 'The Countrywoman'. Not only does he bring the city to life with a few pen strokes for us, so the characters and their situations live in our minds afterwards, he does it with clean, spare prose, far from the more highly literary writers of those or today's times. Personally I would say that if you come across this book, read it, and if you understand what treasure you are holding, keep it.
