Where a choice has had to be made, the alternative of a somewhat slavish adherence to Schopenhauer's ipsissima verba has accordingly been preferred to that of inaccuracy. The result is a piece of work which leaves much to be desired, but which has yet consistently sought to reproduce faithfully the spirit as well as the letter of the original.

In this work, Schopenhauer explains his fundamental idea that at the root of the reality we see around us is a Will that eternally, insatiably seeks to be satisfied. Each human Subject observes the Objects around her from the perspective of that fundamental Will working within each person. Art has the power to make us see the Thing-In-Itself, the Platonic Idea freed from the individual particular manifestation of it, thus enabling us to transcend the individual Will and perceive something of true Reality.

The world is my idea: And so with these words Schopenhauer begins his magnum opus with one of the most provocative opening lines in all of literature. You’ll notice other Schopenhauer books titled, The World as Will and Representation, and The World as Will and Presentation, and perhaps wonder whether he is making some rather fine distinction each by writing an entire separate book. Worry not (Or should I say, ‘worry’?); these are merely translations of the same.

Book 3 gives us Schopenhauer's views on art and & Idea independent of the principle of sufficient reason'. This is quite an extended discussion, though it is not all self-consistent. The final Book is probably the most pessimistic of them all. Although it describes der Wille as the "will to life", Wille zum Leben, a concept that had a profound effect on the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, it is essentially an evil or demonic force that drives us on continually without our ever gaining satisfaction. The only possibility for release for Schopenhauer is through art.

The World as Will and Representation (WWR; German: Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung, WWV) is the central work of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer.

Arthur Schopenhauer, (born February 22, 1788, Danzig, Prussia -died September 21, 1860, Frankfurt am Main ), German philosopher, often called the philosopher of pessimism, who was primarily important as the exponent of a metaphysical doctrine.

Arthur Schopenhauer, (born February 22, 1788, Danzig, Prussia -died September 21, 1860, Frankfurt am Main ), German philosopher, often called the philosopher of pessimism, who was primarily important as the exponent of a metaphysical doctrine of the will in immediate reaction against Hegelian idealism. His writings influenced later existential philosophy and Freudian psychology. Schopenhauer was the son of a wealthy merchant, Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer, and his wife, Johanna, who later became famous for her novels, essays, and travelogues.

This vintage book contains the second volume of Arthur Schopenhauer’s 1818 treatise, "The World As Will And Idea". One of the most influential philosophical works of the nineteenth century, it is Schopenhauer’s greatest endeavour, and constitutes the summation of a lifetime of contemplation. This fascinating book is highly recommended for students of psychology, and would make for a worthy addition to collections of related literature.

Home Arthur Schopenhauer Introduction to Schopenhauer – The World as Will. Arthur Schopenhauer, Philosophy, Videos. Introduction to Schopenhauer – The World as Will. Posted on November 23, 2013March 22, 2018. Schopenhauer did not envision that his philosophy would attract and be exalted by the masses, instead, he realized that for most individuals the world’s existence is not a mystery at all: The lower a man is in an intellectual respect, the less puzzling and mysterious existence is to him; on the contrary, everything, how it is and that it is, seems to him a matter of course.

I bought this edition because it was cheaper than others and is in 2 volumes instead of 3 or 4. I like that there are fewer books in the set than in other editions because I prefer larger books over more books. However, as soon as I got it in the mail, I looked through and saw underlining in a new book! It's part of the edition! They are printing and selling new copies of scans of a used copy of the book! If I'm buying a new book, why do I want some random bloke's underlining? It appears that there are also empty spaces in the text, like something was highlighted and then whited-out in their claimed "digital remastering." They photocopied a print of the book from a library in Toronto. Why couldn't they actually produce a clean and fresh text? Why mass produce copies of a used text? The font size is uneven, and it looks like they tried erasing some of the markings. This is a pathetic edition. I look forward to reading it because it's a great classic of the genre, but I wish I instead spent 60 dollars or whatever on a better edition.

Tough reading...some of it worthwhile, but I gave up after a few pages. Useful information if you are willing to dig.

Do not spend money on this hard cover. The only thing of quality on this book is the cover. The contents are basically scanned bitmaps which have then been enlarged. 'Large Print' looks like a 10th generation copy.

A must read for every one of us pretentious philosophers willing to read the worldviews of a grumpy but insightful Schopenhauer.

Unfortunately this title is misleading and starts in the middle of the book. It is a fair price for what you get but this kind of heady reading is not something one wants to start in the middle. I was unable to find a "part I" to this series so instead purchased an abridgement of the entire work so I intend to read the abridged version until it catches up with this, more detailed part of the work.
It comes from a source that allows you to download books very inexpensively but I didn't look into that as it is not for me. It may be a way to find the volume I of this series.

great ant
This "translation" of The World as Will and Idea printed by General Books LLC is terrible.
No translator is listed. It is incomplete, missing important parts, and was total waste of money.
The disclaimer at the beginning of the book says in part:
"...While the publisher and author have used their best efforts...they make no representation or warranties with respect to the accuracy or completeness of the contents of this book..." Further down it says:
"We have created this book from the original using Optical Character Recognition software to keep the cost of the book as low as possible. ...please forgive any spelling mistakes, missing or extraneous characters..."
That pretty well sums it up. General Books LLC books clearly aren't even worth the money put into making them.
If you want a usable copy look for more well-known publisher. This is unusable for anyone studying the text academically, and fairly worthless for anyone else.

Liked the book
I would it to interested in how the mind constructs ideas and activates them in the material world through the five or six senses.
This copy of 'The World as Will and Idea' is replete with typing errors, to a point that makes it very difficult to read. If another edition is available I would like to exchange it.

Thank you,
