Where a choice has had to be made, the alternative of a somewhat slavish adherence to Schopenhauer's ipsissima verba has accordingly been preferred to that of inaccuracy. The result is a piece of work which leaves much to be desired, but which has yet consistently sought to reproduce faithfully the spirit as well as the letter of the original.

In this work, Schopenhauer explains his fundamental idea that at the root of the reality we see around us is a Will that eternally, insatiably seeks to be satisfied. Each human Subject observes the Objects around her from the perspective of that fundamental Will working within each person. Art has the power to make us see the Thing-In-Itself, the Platonic Idea freed from the individual particular manifestation of it, thus enabling us to transcend the individual Will and perceive something of true Reality.

The world is my idea: And so with these words Schopenhauer begins his magnum opus with one of the most provocative opening lines in all of literature. You’ll notice other Schopenhauer books titled, The World as Will and Representation, and The World as Will and Presentation, and perhaps wonder whether he is making some rather fine distinction each by writing an entire separate book. Worry not (Or should I say, ‘worry’?); these are merely translations of the same.
Book 3 gives us Schopenhauer's views on art and & Idea independent of the principle of sufficient reason'. This is quite an extended discussion, though it is not all self-consistent. The final Book is probably the most pessimistic of them all. Although it describes der Wille as the "will to life", Wille zum Leben, a concept that had a profound effect on the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, it is essentially an evil or demonic force that drives us on continually without our ever gaining satisfaction. The only possibility for release for Schopenhauer is through art.
The World as Will and Representation (WWR; German: Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung, WWV) is the central work of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer.
Arthur Schopenhauer, (born February 22, 1788, Danzig, Prussia -died September 21, 1860, Frankfurt am Main ), German philosopher, often called the philosopher of pessimism, who was primarily important as the exponent of a metaphysical doctrine.
Arthur Schopenhauer, (born February 22, 1788, Danzig, Prussia -died September 21, 1860, Frankfurt am Main ), German philosopher, often called the philosopher of pessimism, who was primarily important as the exponent of a metaphysical doctrine of the will in immediate reaction against Hegelian idealism. His writings influenced later existential philosophy and Freudian psychology. Schopenhauer was the son of a wealthy merchant, Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer, and his wife, Johanna, who later became famous for her novels, essays, and travelogues.
This vintage book contains the second volume of Arthur Schopenhauer’s 1818 treatise, "The World As Will And Idea". One of the most influential philosophical works of the nineteenth century, it is Schopenhauer’s greatest endeavour, and constitutes the summation of a lifetime of contemplation. This fascinating book is highly recommended for students of psychology, and would make for a worthy addition to collections of related literature.

Posted on November 23, 2013March 22, 2018. Schopenhauer did not envision that his philosophy would attract and be exalted by the masses, instead, he realized that for most individuals the world’s existence is not a mystery at all: The lower a man is in an intellectual respect, the less puzzling and mysterious existence is to him; on the contrary, everything, how it is and that it is, seems to him a matter of course.
