Why Prose Composition? Modern Latin curricula usually focus on two objectives: facility in reading Latin literature, and a general knowledge of ancient Roman culture. Some teachers, to be sure, are experimenting with 'active' methods, through which students learn to converse and write in Latin. But these methods are usually promoted as the surest road to reading Latin with ease

The perceived dryness of classical literature is sometimes a major obstacle for achieving fluency in reading Latin, as it discourages students from reading large quantities of text (extensive reading)

Early translations into English

The Ancrene Wisse, for example, continued to be copied and adapted to suit changing tastes and circumstances. Rather different religious experiences went into the making of The Book of Margery Kempe (c. 1432–36), the extraordinary autobiographical record of a bourgeoise woman, dictated to two clerks.
