The Skin Chairs book. 0860684806 (ISBN13: 9780860684800). I'm halfway through The Skin Chairs and my trust in Barbara Comyns is near total. I'm not sure I can describe this book, which on the surface is anything but experimental, but I've never read anything like it. I mean, on one level, sure, there's plenty like it.

Barbara Irene Veronica Comyns Carr (24 December 1907 – 15 July 1992), pseudonym Barbara Comyns, was an English writer and artist. Barbara Irene Veronica Bayley was born in the Warwickshire village of Bidford-on-Avon in 1907. She was one of six children and the family home was Bell Court on the banks of the River Avon. Comyns later recorded her childhood in her novel Sisters by a River.

Virago Modern Classics (Book 528). Daphne du Maurier lived in her beloved Cornwall for most of her life. Its rugged coastline, wild terrain, and tumultuous weather inspired her imagination, and many of her works are set there, including 'Frenchman's Creek', 'Jamaica Inn', and 'Rebecca'. Here she celebrates the land she loved, exploring its legends, its history, and its people, and eloquently makes a powerful plea for Cornwall's preservation.

Barbara Comyns (1909-92) was born in Bidford-on-Avon in Warwickshire. She was an artist and writer, worked in advertising, dealt in old cars and antiques, bred poodles and developed property. She was twice married, and she and her second husband lived in Spain for eighteen years, returning to the UK in the early 1970s. She is the author of eleven books, including Sisters by a River (1947), Our Spoons Came from Woolworths (1950), The Vet's Daughter (1959), The Skin Chairs (1962) and A Touch of Mistletoe (1967). She died in Shropshire in 1992. Библиографические данные.

THE SKIN CHAIRS By Barbara Comyns. 200 pp. New York: Virago Modern Classics/Penguin. THESE are strange little books, veering as they do from the sweetly comforting to the grisly. They're about childhood and growing up. And here, in two novels by Barbara Comyns, that means initiation into the horrors of life. Barbara Comyns's mother became deaf at the age of 27, and in ''Sisters'' this deafness becomes a metaphor for the children being cut off from the mother and the mother cut off from herself. 'After she had had six babies at eighteen monthly intervals Mammy suddenly went deaf, perhaps her subconcious mind just couldn't bear the noise of babies crying any more.
