There are multiple reproductions of Magritte's work, and while (unfortunately) most of them aren't in color, most of the crucial plates are. And for those that aren't, virtually all the images can be found online in color if you look.

You will recognize many of the paintings in this book, and you will find several "new" favorite paintings here too. Sunny blue skies. bowler-hatted gents, ambiguous figures, and hooded mystery men abound, of course.

Magritte's most popular works are still indeed very popular and reproduced as posters, calendars, etc. They also are an important influence on advertising and commercial art. In fact, Magritte's imagery (along with Dali's melting watches) are the go-to graphics for when an art director wants something a bit surreal. (Pink Floyd's album covers make this point quite well). Suzi Gablik doesn't touch on this aspect of the Magritte phenomenon, but she does include information on Magritte's background in advertising and his philosophy on reproductions as being just as satisfactory a conduit for spreading ideas as the original artwork.

If all you want are Magritte's "greatest hits," then buy a calendar. If you'd like an informative monograph about the artist, buy this book!

Excellent book

Loved looking at the paintings, but got tired of reading about the discussions by Magritte and many others about what surrealism was or wasn't. I'm glad Magritte went his own way!

I love Art History and the way Taschen series is written, I have been an avid reader of their books. I have collected their Hard Covers for my Coffee Table and soft covers for me to take with me -- to bed, to bathroom, to doctor's office and to a trip to my relative's house.

Imagine a book about the artist Rene Magritte which included:
1) a great collection of his paintings in large beautifully-colored images; and
2) a text that ignores the paintings and rambles on about obscure facets of Magritte's life
and times.
Well, that's what we have here - the paintings are great - the text seems to be about someone or somewhere else.

This was a pleasant surprise, inexpensive yet very good! This book can be recommended to collectors who want more information on the artist without spending a lot. I found the book well illustrated and do not agree with the reviewer who disliked the quality.
This book has many of Magritte's painting with large colorplates, for the money it's worth it. The 25 series books have not disappointed me yet especially if you just want a summary of artist' s works.
