I bought this book several years ago because I always buy Jan Karon's books but I put off reading it until just recently. I waited so long because I expected just excerpts of the earlier books and nothing more. How very wrong I was!! This is a Jan Karon book that can stand on its own as a complete story with many author's thoughts as she took us through the stories capturing the essence of each one. The character identification listings are great. I'm going to go back and start reading the series from book one with the Bedside Companion along to help me more fully understand each character and the relationship they have with one another. Missing this book would be like missing half the message of the Mitford series.

I recommend this lighthearted collection extracted from Jan Karon's Mitford Series to anyone who would enjoy the kind of book you can put down and pick back up when it calls your name again. A familiarity with the entire series is a helpful prerequisite, although not mandatory. Excerpts are chosen well by the author and her sister, and can provide perfect little short stories for nostalgic and humorous entertainment. As is always the case with Jan Karon, grace abounds among her own words of faith and endearing quotes from dead poets and other notable authors, even obscure and unknown writers...like SimplyMe! Here's a fine quote for you from her intro: "I am absolutely unshaken in my faith that God created us, loves us, and wants us not only to be good but to be happy" (~Archibald Rutledge). I will savor this cheerful companion in small bites as I would a decadent dessert.

The book was in excellent condition. However, I realized that I didn't really enjoy reading snippets from all her other books. I would rather reread the originals.

I have read several other reviews and I’m not sure if people understand this is a bedside companion and not a new book. I’m sorry I’m not trying to be rude but I use it to help remember parts of the books that I had read a year ago and refresh my memory since there are several books. It is very helpful when used as a bedside companion...

A fun addition to the library of any collector of Jan Karon's Mitford novels. While it does not add any new information for fans, it contains fond memories of characters and events that are fun to page through.

This is an excellent way to review and remember all your favorite Mitford characters. Jan Karon's fictional village and its beloved priest, Father Tim, is a treasure that comes alive and touches the hearts of all who read the series.

This book is so uplifting and positive and spiritual. I have read all of her other books in paperback and now have them on my Kindle app to reread again. It brings back memories of her books and why she wrote them. Most excellent writing. It reveals a very personal side of Jan Karon.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Mitford series when the books were new. This is a great way to "revisit" Mitford as well as to learn more about the author.
